I've got an L61R with a wood stock that could use a new recoil pad. Does anyone know if Limbsver or Decelerator makeone that will fit or would a grindable pad be the only route? Thanks

From my experience, the pre-fitted ones don't fit! Grind to fit from a smith that knows what he is doing would be best.

I don't think anyone makes a Precision Fit for a Sako L61R.

- try the Medium G2F in 1/2" or 1".

I was thinking a grindable pad would be the only way. I might run into problems with screw hole alignment however. I've heard a wooden dowel glued into the hole and sanded flush works for drilling new holes but I'm still a little skeptical. Anyone got experience here. Thanks for the replies.

You see lots of early Sakos with deteriorated pads. Some of the pads apparently had a chemical mix that either started to harden and crumble with age, or sorta turned to jello. Others of the same period look as good as new. Some people mistakenly think it has to do with storing them sitting on their heel, but a proper pad will not be damaged this way.

Pick out a nice pad and have a competent gunsmith fit it to your stock. This is a bit tricky to do without damaging the finish of the stock, but experienced guys do it successfully every day. Screw holes are not a problem. If they align "just wrong", then he can putty up the old holes with plastic wood or similar filler and drill new holes. Gluing in a dowel would work, but is unnecessary.

Stoncreek you are right on. My rubber ventilated pad has become brittle and hard. It is also slick now and last time I was shooting I didn't get a good enough mount and the slick pad slipped right off my t-shirt and the scope gave me a nice cut. I'll take it to my smith and have him grind on the medium size pad that 500N recommended. I was unaware of the plastic wood trick. Thanks for the tip Stonecreek.
