Have you any experience with the 7mm 190 gr Barnes Originals, as shot from a 7x57? I'd like to try these for close range bear hunting (yeah, yeah, I got stronger rifles, but it sounds interesting, so humor me a bit). The 190 is only 15 grains more then the 175 RN, so I assume it would do well, too. May I assume the Barnes load books have load info for this bullet in the 7x57? ~~~Suluuq

Hey Rusty, The Barnes Manual #3 lists the bullet as 195 grain original for all the 7mm cartridges including the 7x57. Looks like 47.5 gr of RL-22 @ 2371 fps is the hottest load and they recommend 39 to 43 gr of IMR 4350 at 2124 fps to 2342 fps from their 24" barrel. SD is listed at .345 and BC is .570. I am not enough of a ballistician to know if the twist of the 7x57 will stabilize such a long bullet. I am guessing that it would be ok at the low velocities we are talking about. And it should be one penetrating load! Good question! I have a CZ550 7x57 that I'm just starting to play with and am looking at staying with the heavier bullets and slower velocities. Maybe someone who has some experience or knowledge regarding this will weigh in. Good Hunting, PS-I thought it was a 190 grain bullet, too! [ 02-23-2003, 21:26: Message edited by: ACRecurve ]

"PS-I thought it was a 190 grain bullet, too!" I'd just about swear that the last time I noticed them in Midways catalogue they were 190 gr also? A couple months ago they sent me flatbase 100 gr 277s that were listed as boattails,I sent em back.Should have checked the Barnes site. Jeff http://www.barnesbullets.com/800.html

The bullet is indeed a 195 grainer. I discovered this after I signed off yesterday, and looked through a Midway catalog. A friend here uses this bullet on walrus and seals, shot from his 7 Rem Mag, and never recovered a bullet. He speaks highly of it. Anyone with 175 Hornady RN experience? I once did a mail order with Midway, but they didn't have any back then. My current rifle is a Ruger No1 7x57, unshot as of yet. The Hornady loadbook says the twist is 1-9.5 for a Ruger M77. With my new rifle project I'm working on, my main choice is a 7x57. My gunsmith has 1-9 twist in stock, so I'll likely go with this rate. Its faster then the Ruger twist. ~~~Suluuq

a Friend have used them in his 7mm magnum and was very happy with how they worked on Kudu and Gemsbok

Barnes has said they are phazing out the originals to concentrate on just the X-style bullets so order now. I have a 1 n 9 twist 7x57 with 22 inch barrel and it stabalizes the 195 grain barnes very well at those under 2400 ft/sec velocities. Barnes e-mailed me that this bullet is 1.425 inches long but it is not a roundnose but a very full-shanked spitzer but not a sharp spitzer. I believe the 175 nosler is 1.375 inches long.
