The .358 is certainly no LONG-RANGE cartridge when compared to say a .300 Weatherby. But it is NOT just a short range woods rifle either. If you fire a Speer Hotcore 250-grain bullet out of one, and zero it +4" at 100 yardfs (the same as I do with a .270 Win. for western mountain hunting), it will be +3" @ 200 and only -6.8" at 300 yards. Plenty good enough for deer or elk out to that distance. 300 yards is NOT short range - at least not by my definition. I consider short-range to be uinder 150 yards.

My favourite .35 caliber is, and has always been, .358 Norma Magnum, with a bit more oumpfff then the .350 Remington Magnum. I've shot somewhere around 30+ scandinavian moose and 2 scandinavian bears using this caliber and one thing is sure - it's the ultimate caliber for me. Moderate muzzle speed doesn't shear eatable meat to much when shooting at close range, and it still has quite good long range capabilities. If anyone would chamber a gun to a .35 caliber I would vote for .358 Norma Magnum. But then again, it's just my personal opinion.

.358 Win is by my means to near the 9.3x57 wich (in my country) is available in mass by old converted m96 and m98 military mauser bolt actions. I think it's to "tired" and lacks power, but for deer it may be useable, and for bigger game at close range.
