Hi all,

Looking at a 90% condition danzig mauser 98 in 8x57. It has the set trigger and it is in great shape, bright bore. The asking price is 1200.00. I love the looks but don't know a ton about them other than a brief history and that they are rare. Anyone own one? Thoughts on the price?

Thanks!

Not stumped at all, just without any further data is like stating you found a red ford truck on the web and asking what it's worth?

With the limited information available one can however state the following:

These guns are relatively rare because of the situation surrounding the Danzig Armoury.

It was a Imperial German Government armoury making guns for the government only. Typical of those then is a lack of civilian proofs. It ceased to exist after WW1 due to the treaty of Versailles rulings.

They did make limited numbers of sporting Mausers which were sold to the civilian population but they all bore very small serial numbers no more than 4 digits.

The guns themselves had a very typical ( pre war) German as opposed to Austrian flavour. i.e. light Mauser sporting stock, with rounded pistol grip, big drop a the heel , flat side panels and light schnabel for end. The barrel profile matched the light stock in bulk. Double european set triggers were standard.

These look very much like standard Model B Mausers.

Overall very pleasing guns.
They typically fetch prices around 2 to 2.5 but no more than 3 k for a good condition specimen

Wow, guess that without photos and a real description of the condition (NRA Excellent, etc. not "great shape") no one is willing to risk a guess and steer you wrong. Roll Eyes

Try the Gun Collecting forum on AR, you may have better luck.

Most likely it is a post ww1 sporter made by a private gunsmith; value is $100 to 10000. Need pics to see exactly what it is.

I've come across a couple of these. If I recall correctly, both had small-ring large-thread receivers. They were very slim and handy looking rifles.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

I'll try to get some photos... I was going to pass on it but it sounds like I might be making a mistake at the price. I'll post some pics as soon as I can figure how to. Sorry for the lack of info guys. I don't know much about the old mausers.

A Danzig made Mauser can be either a large ring Gew 98 or a small ring K98. Both large thread.

Sean- you might also want to check here:http://www.mausercentral.com/
I know Mike McCabe (Z1R) frequents there as well as here on AR, as do a few other folks who may specialize in Mausers

I have a what I believe to be a Danzig Factory Mauser. Looks exactly like #mau_0663 about 3/4 of the way down on this page.

I inherited mine and it is a duplicate of the one shown in the links down to the stock, scope, mounts, trigger and case hardening. I don't think mine is worth what they are asking for that one though. Unfortunately the stock was broken through the wrist and a replacement made by Fajen a long time ago. Still have the original stock though.

Yours like this or is it a build off a military action?

I'd like to understand the real value. Apparently it isn't $3k because the one in the links has been around for a while.

I purchased an SR Danzig, it arrived a couple of days ago. Nice old rifle but I have a question / request, this rifle has a very plain steel "sheet" metal butt-plate, I'm not certain is original. Can someone confirm that this is the way it should be / post a pic. Thank you --- John

John,
Sent you a PM reply as well but I think that buttplate is likely original. Mine is very plain and I've seen similar in pictures.
Does your rifle have the scope in claw mounts? I need a pic of the rear mount locking lug contour.
