Quote: Spot on Allen, if your looking for a flat shooting 30 Mag, a 200 grain spitzer is the way to go. I might add I too come from a family of 300 Weatherby users. I personally don't care for the Weatherby cartridge, my pet pig of the thirty mags is a 30-338. I like it better than the 300 Weatherby or the 300 Win Mag, for accuracy and ease of reloading reasons. I admit once a 300 Win is dialed in and working right its a very good cartridge but it tends to be fussy and tempermental on the bench. The bad part of the 30-338 is its a wildcat and always will be and in my older age I am less interested in wildcats. Between the three listed 30 mags there isn't much real difference on terminal performance there all pretty much the same when loaded with the same bullet.

Schromf, I have both cartridges, both in Mod 70 rifles, and I much prefer the 338Win Mag. The 300 Wby Mag is the only Weatherby cartridge I own, as anyone who knows me will tell you I'm not a wby fan, I consider them to be ill designed, over-bore capacity cartridges which will do nothing better that their standard counterparts, yet make more noise, errode barrels, and require long throats to hold pressuers down, and burn more powder, to get the same result on game! The 338 WM will shoot as flat as any of the 300s for all practicle purposes, yet has more poop up close on bite backs, with heavy bullets that are not available in any of the 300s. I mean no disrespect to anyone who likes WBY cartridges, or rifles, they simply are not my choice, all rifles/cartridges are a personal choice! There's no way, no way that a 338WM will shoot as flat as a 300 Weatherby. I love both cartridges, but if I was limited to one, the 300 Weatherby would be it. Elgin Gates took just about every game in the world including buffalo and elephant with it. Load it with a 220gr solid and you're ready. jorge USN (ret) DRSS Verney-Carron 450NE Cogswell & Harrison 375 Fl NE Sabatti Big Five 375 FL Magnum NE DSC Life Member NRA Life Member

Jorge is most likely correct, and I knew he would respond, because unlike me he "IS" a fan of anything Weatherby makes. I still like the 338WM better for all round big game hunting. IMO, the only place the 2 or 3 inches flatter trejectory has any effect is out at 400 yds, and unless shooting in canyon country for ELK Muledeer, or sheep, I never shoot that far at LIVE targets. If I can't get withing 300 yds, I simply do not shoot! I can hit whitetail deer at 300 yds with a 375 H&H zeroed dead on at 200yds, it is only 12" low at 300 yds with a 300 gr bullet. That is an easy shot! A 338 WM is only 9"low zeroed the same way, with a 250 gr bullet, so that is a no brainer! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

It doesn't seem like a one on one comparison since both cartridges aren't available in most, if any, rifles. Get whatever rifle you like, either cartridge will be fine.

It really depends upon exactly what you want to do with the catridge as both are excellent in my opinion. However, I generally prefer the .338 over any .300. The more game I have shot the more I have come to believe in shooting as big as you can handle. Nothing ever gets killed too dead.

My .300 H&H loves 200grn Noslers. It is not enough to fight for natural land and the west; it is even more important to enjoy it...So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends... - Edward Abbey

I would say Allen is spot on, however, my Wby may never again come out of the safe and I enjoy the 338. My recoil tolerance is low when I'm shooting for fun and the Wby (w/ Wby stock)gets unfun much faster than the Win 70 338. I believe similarly stocked, the Wby (200 grain) would still be more of a hand full than my 338 (210 grain). On a hunt it would not be a factor.
