My 2nd shoot with her today. I brought along some bags to rest it on this time. I had two loads along , the 1st being a 150 grain sierra ph , over 44 grains of IMR 4064. It shot pretty well not moa or anything but decent. But my 2nd load was 47 grains of W=748 under a 150 grain speer flat base. I posted about the pressure problems with it last week. I used hornady brass this time , and the load was mild. It was windy so my paper targets were a pain. I started shooting at various chunks of garbage left behind by ass holes, And got some very good groups on some ammo boxes. When I got to the last 3 rounds, I paced of 60 strides and put the lid to a starbucks bottled drink between to pieces of wood. Got 3 holes touching for about a half inch group. I have a good load now but want to up the powder charge a little. But i am running low on 748 If you hear of any for sale please let me know...Tj3006

Good shooting TJ. What model 99 do you have? Does it have a lever or tang safety?

I think mine is an f model. It has the lever safety and brass counter. But its not marked f anyplace , just light as a feather. It dawned me that i have of the vary 1st .308 caliber hunting rifles ever built. The 99 is a little hard to pin down the exact year but its certainly 50s My featherweight model 70 is 53 and so is my model 88. Benchmark ? never used it. i will research... thanks..tj

Tj, Got a serial number I can tell you when it was made and I'm sure the 50s is very close..The 1950s mod. 99 Savage has a blunt forend and not the schnable btw...it is also the finest of all Savages in my opinion...I have one that I am very close to wearing out, no blue and a stock that resembles drift wood, but its still shooing one inch 3 shot groups all day long. Its my saddle gun and shows the wear..I would love to find a 99F 1950 model in 250-3000 there are some around but nobody is selling them. My nephew has a 284 and its super nice. I have owned then in the past in 284, 358, 250-3000, 308 and 243, wish to hell I had kept them, but that's never been in my makeup!! Damn it! Something about Savage 99, WW748, 308 Win, and accuracy that just go together. I have made that recommendation to several 99 owners/reloaders with good results. You pin down the year of manufacture by the letter code on the lever boss. I do not remember how it works. Head to a Savage collectors site and look around, its there.

tj, I have two mod. 99s in 250-3000..An early mod 99E from about 1921 that shoots extremely well and is in really nice condition is for sale on the AR Classified Guns..I own it and guarantee and its priced right! Ok, that aside, I chronographed my loads of 48- grs of WW-748 with 150 gr. Balistic tips, Silvertips and Hornadys in my 99F and averaged 3010 for 10 rounds, so I suspect your load is 2900 plus and that's all you need for elk. bear. deer such and stuff. max is 48.5 in the book, and 48 was sure max in my 99 so I'm going to drop a grain and shoot 47 grs. My 99F is a tack driver also... If one understands the 99s, he just has to love'em.
