I've always heard, if you shoot a magnum.... about any old place will do...

On my first hunt in South Africa, I had a PH essentially tell me that, however, his .375 H&H bullet in the foot of a wounded Waterbuck didn't drop him, but my 7 mm bullet through his shoulder did.

I like to eat most of the North American game that I shoot, and I have found that a bullet placed in the crease behind the front shoulder 1/3 up into the body kills them quickly with very little meat loss.

Very interesting thread. Just about everyone here takes the "behind the shoulder/front leg shot". For me 100 to 150 yard shots are to the noodle and anything past that I try for the behind the front leg center mass shot. About 90% of my shots are within 150 yards, therefore lots of noodle shots with NO damaged meat unless you like to have scrambled deer brains for breakfast?

For the last 15 of my 45 years of hunting, I have only made one broadside shot on a deer and that was this year. All of the rest have been neck shots. Two of which were over 200yds. and both the bucks and I were calm and still. And of coarse I had and excellant rest from a tripod overlooking a sendero both times. The remaining deer were shot with the use of shooting sticks and me sitting and them within 100yds. Again both parties were calm and still. I personally do not like head shots on anything except turtles and snakes in the water, and consider a head shot to be un-sportsman like except as a finishing shot. There is too great of chance of blowing the jaw off an animal. I much prefer a neck shot on the thickest part of the neck on an old buck as long as he and the shooter are calm. Any way you look at it, it is either a kill shot or a no-kill shot. If you make good you hit the spinal cord/jugular area, he falls right there DOA. If you hit just meat, he will usually live it out 90% of the time with no ill side-effects other than a neck ache. And the best part of it is, any expanding bullet can be used, even the ballistic tips or Sierras which lend themselves quite well to this situation and again if both are calm (shooter & deer) this shot can be made from any angle if the deer co-operates by looking around once in a while.
Naturally, if either one of us,me or the deer, is not calm, then I much rather aim for the heart and lung area as I have had to on Mule and Whitetail deer alike.
Even on hogs I aim for the neck.... usually.
On coyotes - center of mass as they are usually moving around alot.
Did I mention that you need an accurate rifle with a good scope going up in power. And being a good shot helps also.

I can see where howardee would believe that. Pitiful and Pathetic!

Many of us are familiar with Hotsh$t's favorite target zone on deer......the Famous Carolina Butt Shot. Hotsh$t likes those Blue Dot loads in his shotgun for this shot placement and depends on his buddies .25ACP for the finishing shot. Shameful and somewhat revealing about the old Glenn!!!!!

I shoot them through the lungs. Relatively large target and the critters have always died fairly fast.
