Going on a Roosevelt Elk hunt in November in Oregon . Any suggestions on bullet weight and type for Roosevelt Elk ? Barrel,is 1:9 twist rate

Mine 280PDK which is more like the 280 Gibbs loves the 160 Accubond. I use it for everything from WTX whitetail & elk to Africa plans game.

I tried the 150 LRAB's in my 280Ai, my brother's too and my son's 7mm Rem mag and nothing I could do would make them shoot the way I expect.

The one I expect to shoot well and perform even better is the one Paul is using but alas, I have not shot them yet since I found a bullet adequate for sheep that shot tiny little groups but might be lacking in retained mass for elk.

I use the 160 Accubonds and the Nosler load with N560 and get 2950 fps and very accurate.

That should work on any elk if they shoot accurately in your rifle.

160 or 175 Nosler partitions. Or maybe Barnes TSX, but I've never tried them in a 7mm.

In my mind it kind of depends on the range, I like heavier closer up. Long ago I shot my first elk with a military surplus 7x57 mm Mauser with 175's, Corelokts, PowerPoint's and Partitions, all I ever used in it. Works fine but just don't expect them to fall right down. Roosevelt's are bigger than Rocky Mountain elk so keep shooting. Currently I have a 7mm Rem mag but have never shot an elk with it but it should work the same as your 280.

I have shot through a couple pretty big elk with the Barnes 140 gr TTSX bullet. Never recovered a bullet, always passed through. Elk doesn't go far. The 150 gr partition is also a very good bullet in the 280 ,280 Imp or the 7x64 . See what shoots best in your rifle and go with it.

160 accubond.

I use the Nosler "factory" loaded 150 grain E-Tips on Oregon elk east of the Deschutes. Great penetration and weight retention.

Thanks for the replies will try and work load up for .160gr bullet partition or Swift a-frames and see how they shoot.

160 or 175 gr. Nosler partition or the Accubonds, all good choices..For elk I tend to go heavy in the Ackley and 7 mags, and my personal choice is the 175 gr. its better at extended range maybe 350 yards or more...I found it to be an excellent choice in a max loaded 7x57 on elk. But again both work well.

totally agree with the heavy bullet -- and not loaded anything like max ...

I have had great experience with both the 140gr AB and TTSX in my 280Rem. Last week it was a TTSX at 435yds on a caribou - a complete pass through and it smashed the humerus on the far side of the animal. I found one copper petal lying in the exit wound as I skinned.

Its a rare 7mm of any stripe that won't shoot the 160 Accubond.

I'd recommend playing with the 160 Accubond and 140 TTSX /140 E-Tip / 139 GMX. Use whichever the rifle likes. All of them will handle elk.

Whatever shoots best. I'd try the following first:

150 gr Scirocco II
140 gr TTSX

Can't go wrong with a 150g Partition or a 150g A-Frame. Lots of good suggestions, but I'd want something I know will expand, and penetrate. Both the Partitions and A-Frames are proven performers.

My 280 Ackley will do so sub moa at 3050 FPS with RL26

So, what specific recipe are you using? My KMA gives me 3000 with RE-26, 62.7, Nosler brass, WLRM, not quite "max", but, good groups and will whack any animal here in BC.
