Ok everyone. I have a old model 70 in 30-06. The barrel has a bulge in it at the tip. I could just cut off 2" and re-crown but what fun is that? I have been thinking of re-barreling it to 6.5x284. Its going to cost me about $180 to by a A&B barrel and have it installed and chambered. I with then finnish it in GUNCOAT. I would like to know who has/had one and what they thought of it? How long is the barrel? And any other thoughts that you folks had about it. Thanks Jovan

Welcome J B, and re: 6.5/284... best cartridge I have ever owned or shot at distance. Amazingly accurate and flat shooter. This is in a Hart 27" on a Rem 700 SA, It's just an awesome performer.

Mine is a 1 in 9 twist, next will be a 1 in 8.5. or a 1 in 8. I shoot the 140 - 142 match HP's for varmints and accuracy. Longest witnessed kill was 1247 yards really! Missed by less than a foot at 1499 lasered... that was exciting. IMR 4831 or IMR 7828 have been best for me, but many folks use 4350 range. The long action would be better, my loads run 3.17+
Good luck

My 6.5x284 is in a left handed MRC short action but I can load it to about 3.2" if I need to because the MRC short action is really an intermediate length action.

I have a 26" long 1:8.5 twist Krieger and shoot the 142 grain SMK using H4350 and Lapua brass. I only have 118 shots through it so far and it's counted a coyote at 732 yards, prairie dogs out past 800 yards and an antelope at 268 yards.

The 6.5-284 is certainly an excellent long range caliber. You may want to also consider the 6.5-06. I had a Winny mod 70 in 30-06 that I converted to 6.5 and have thoroughly enjoyed the ride. If you do not reload, this would not be an option. You will find ballistic info on this caliber in the Nosler manual and many other online manuals as well.

Also, the action you currently have is considerd a long action caliber. You are attempting to convert to that of a short action.

Either way you go, you will not be disappointed as long as a reputable 'smith does the job. Bot are very accurate calibers and both have lots of data to get started with. Good luck!

DON'T do it on a short barrel. I did mine as a light rifle with a 20" barrel and it is the loudest rifle I own.

Jovan, I have three, twisted them all at 1 to 8, they are 24 to 25 1/2" barrels. They are all built on the .06 length action, which allows plenty of room to seat the bullets out if you want, and they feed flawlessly.

They shoot some scary good groups out there a long ways with regularity. On game performance has been excellent. About 25 whitetails down with the three of them, 100% pass throughs with extremely quick kills, use the 130 gr Accubond and the 120 gr. TSX.
This caliber shoots as flat as my .270 in practical field use, and I believe has the edge in the ethereal category of 'inherent accuracy'

I'd do one in a heartbeat!

I have one in an Encore. It is very accurate. The only twist to get is 1:8 (unless you go 1:7), 142 SMK go into .3" groups for me and recoil is mild. The longest shot I have made with it was on a prairie dog at a lasered 517 yards, it is an Encore pistol. First shot was 3 inches high and the dog stood up. I held the same place and put the next one through his mouth. I love mine.
