I would take the .375 and for the other...I would take my favorite rifle to shoot...whatever it is. Mine If I were doing your trip (no DG) would be the .375 and a .308 Win bolt gun. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. Right on Ray, I have both and they are my 2 gun choice for Africa if Ele is not on the menu. Also a spare scope goes along in QD's just incase. Larry Sellers SCI Life Member

If I were going, and didn't want o buy a new gun, I would take my .338-06 AI and either .257 Roberts, .243, or 7mm-08. Probably the Kimber Model 84 Classic .257 Roberts. I'm gonna start checking into an African hunt. Never been, and would like to go. Ideas, or good recs. welcome.

Can't go wrong with a 375 H&H and 30-06. An added plus is the availability of ammo should there be a cock-up and your ammo does not arrive with you. Last hunt I took 416 Rem Mag and 30-06. Nailed ele and hippo with the 416. Shot leopard bait with the 30-06. Tim

The 375 H&H is a classic and all you would ever need. Pick your favorite from your battery and go have fun. When I go, I am taking my 338 RUM and my 35 Whelen, both loaded with Nosler 250 gr PT's. JD338

The .375 H&H is the absolute legal minimum for dangerous game in most African jurisdictions. I don't know about you, but bare minimum on something that can kill you doesn't sound good for me. My choice is .416 Rem Mag for the thick skinned dangerous stuff and either .338 Win Mag or 9.3x62 for everything else depending on whether you are in open plains or bushveldt. If you are committed to the .375 as your big bore, then its also fine for larger plains game like eland, zebra, greater kudu or blue wildebeest. So a .300 Win Mag would be fine for everything else. I prefer the .300 H&H but the .300 Win Mag is available in 10 times as many places in Africa as any other small to medium bore magnum.

For the plains game my two battery recommendation is the classic one - 375 H&H + 300H&H or 7x57 + 333 Jeffery. CZ

My choice would be the .375 H&H or 9.3 X 62 paired with my 300 H & H. Pretty much covers all the bases with the exception of ele maybe? Larry Sellers SCI Life Member

Mate that 375 with a 318 Westley Richards! It's Africa, after all, and we only live once... Personally I would go with less for plains game than what you have listed but of the three I would take the 300 Win Mag. My last time over for plains game I took my 375 H&H and a 300 Whby Mag. Next time it will be my 338 Win Mag and my 270 Whby Mag Mark X Ultra Lightweight.

I'll be sticking with my 505 Gibbs for exactly the same reason. And this year, Norma has 3 different factory loaded ammo in this calibre, as well as offering new brass in 505 for reloading. Since you're after little stuff like duiker and you've got all the big stuff covered with the .375, I'd go with something small and pleasant to shoot. A .257 Roberts, 6.5x55 (my favorite) or a 7x57. If you pick the 6.5x55 or the 7x57, you could easily cover most plains game with your small rifle as long as the range is reasonable. Out of your choices for the second rifle, I'd go with .300 Win Mag, since ammo is more widely available.

I know what you mean - although as many dangerous dames as I've tangled with, some of whom really made life interesting, I never felt compelled to shoot one.... (What can I say; some typos are just more fun than others...)

Yeah but only if I could manage to locate an exact twin to my L/H Winchester Model 70 .375H&H but a .30/06 Sprg. & 375H&H battery is an outstanding combo. When I don't take the Winchester the .375H&H & .30/06 Sprg. combo is what I arrive with in a Blaser R93 2-barrel set. Have Fun! Cheers, Number 10

In Taylor's Africa Rifles.. etc, book, he says how much he likes the 300 H&H over the 30 06 for plains game due to the increased velocity. Since the velocity of the 300 H&H as ppublished by him was 2700 with a 180gr bullet, I think John would have liked the 30 06/375 pair. Sure he may even go for the 300 for sentimental reasons, but just based on numbers it's a dmn good match. If he could have seen todays bullet choices and performance, he would have been amazed.
