I notice that in many of the metric calibers there still seems to be the odd number that equates to the original metric weight.
i guess thats why we see 139 gr. 173 gr. ect...
but the bullets of companys like rws, brenneke and S&B also have some features i havent seen.
whats the real story behing the hair cutting edge i see on so many european bullets. does this reall CUT hair on entry?
i have 9 boxs of the S&B 173 gr. 7x64's coming and they all seem to have this feature.

Yesterday I was on the range using RWS 293 gr. TUG bullets in 9.3x62. They cut perfectly round holes in paper, just like pistol wadcutters do.

i could be wrong, but i thought this was more so that a bullet company could have a "proprietary" bullet.

I always thought that the odd weights 139, 154 ect. were because the european bullets were weighed in grams. ie 8, 8.5, 9, 10 ect.

Well, let's see - 139 grains = 9.01 grams, 154 ghrains = 9.98 grams..... close enough, I guess!

KSTEPHENS,

Yeah, some of the metric bullet weights are kinda weird but you get accustomed to them. Simply because of the Gramms vs. Grains thing though. We (us U.S.A.ers) use alot more Grains than they do Gramms.

Well, I'm here to tell ya - that yes, Martha those "Scharfrand" (litteral translation: Sharp Edge) which I guess we'd turn into "Cutting Edge" REALLY do cut hair at the entry wound just as slick and clean as can be and like Kurt said they really impress the heck outa me when sighting-in. Neat bullet holes just like 7mm, .308" or 8mm wadcutters - cool.

You have to look around a bit in the grass, field or forest floor to find the hairs but in the winter when there's snow on the ground you can see them just as clear as the nose on your face. Now don't get me wrong; it's not like you just got a haircut or anything but there'll be some animal hair there nevertheless.

The REALLY impressive part about Scharfrand bullets is not exactly the hair cutting feature itself; instead it's when a German Forester or Tracking Dog Handler gets down on his all four's and starts scrutinizing the area where Bwana-Be said his entry shot occurred. Not every time and not everyone can do it - but most will not only find the hair but be able to identify the body part from whence the hair originated and tell you where you ACTUALLY hit it.

It's when they look up you; as you stand there rather nonchalantly, stating for the umteenth time - "Shot looked good to me when I pulled the trigger" and his response is; "It's belly hair" that you know it's gonna be a long track after that Deer.

Sounds kinda far-fetched I know but Been There-Done That, got the Tee-Shirt.

dad punched a 170 gr 30-30 right thru a holly tree a couple of years ago and figured he hit the deer solid because of the hair.
it turned out to be belly hair that was kicked out when the buck took off. you could see the folicles from were they pulled out.
i tracked his prints for about 45 yards without ever finding blood so i figured he got a hell of a punch to the ribs.
hair at the POI can really tell the tale, ya know.
do they cut the skin as well?
i have seen entrance holes w/ Hornady tipped bullets that looked like pin holes.

KS.....

The Scharfrand type bullets will poke a nice, neat, caliber-sized, cookie-cutter entry hole in a Deer or Wild Boar - no problem.
