Is it true that a bullet shot out of a 308 will bounce off a deer at 200 yards ? is that why everyone needs a 30 cal super duper mag?

I just tryed my new pre 64 m70 featherwieght 308 and I wonder if it will bounce off a deer cause it aint a goin over 3500 +++ fps

I would say no, GSP7, but my .300 Win will shoot 200 gr bullets much more effectively, which is a caliber/bullet combo I like to use for elk. But I agree with you on how great a .308 is for deer.

just put a 38" barrel on it,...and then it will build the speed it needs to kill that deer. If I were to guess,..I wouldn't trust a short barreled 308 much past 150yds on anything but a groundhog

A .308 is plenty of rifle for most all game in the US. It will not bounce off a deer at 200 yds. Be sure you are using a game bullet and you should never have a problem dropping deer or just about anyother game.

I have hunted with and tested all of these rounds and the 308 is excellent for deer sized game. If you are a handloader, the 300 WSM is more flexible, as it retains excellent accuracy with reduced loads and can step up to cross canyon and plains hunting with little strain and moderate recoil.

GSP7: You suffer from the same illness as I, namely inferiority complex. When I got my Remington 700 Safari in 458 Win Mag last year, I thought it was gonna be a real thumper and waaaay cool.

Today I realize that anyone without a 458 Lott is a whimp (that would be me), although I personally consider the Lott a whimp as well, the 460 is the real thumper!

So, the 308 Win must be considered a 458 Win Mag, while the 30-06 is a 458 Lott, and the 300 Win Mag / Weatherby is the 460 Weatherby.

Exapit... Na , no inferiority complex here. I got a killer deal on this 1953 m 70 featherwieght that just happened to be a 308. Hell, its a nice rifle and studying the ballistics it isnt to much slower than a 06 , 200 fps max with a given load and some loads pretty close behind a 06.
Im loading up some reloader 15 with some 165 gr and 180 gr noslers. should make a mice pig and deer gun, elk too.

My lightest big game rifle is a .308 and I love that caliber...I also have and use a 30-06 and a 300 H&H..They each have their place..If I had to give two of them up and keep one, then I would keep the 300 H&H...
