Buster I have a 300 H&H that I built for myself a few years back. It is on a FN Mauser action with a 24 inch Douglas barrel(what I was using at that time)with a Bastonge walnut stock. I started using it before it was finished and it is like that today. I have used this rifle to take several different types of animals in different places. Antelope Whitetail and Mule deer Black bear Elk and Water Buffalo from the Outback of Australia Loads for my gun run from, 165 bullets is 72.5 Gr of RL 19 and Federal 215 primers to 220 Gr Woodleigh Weldcore / Barnes Solids with 65.0 Gr of IMR 4350. All in all an excelent caliber. James

I'd like to hear from those who own and shoot rifles chambered in .300H&H. What rifles are you using and what game have you taken? I'd also like to hear what loads you're using. I recently was given a '57 vintage Model 70 .300H&H and have been eagerly reading everything I can find. My rifle will be used for mule deer and elk here in Utah. Thanks in advance.

Hey Buster, I'm using a 300 H&H this year exclusively, everything else I own is in the shop. It's a Winchester M-70 Classic (current) that started life out as a 7MAG. Mine really likes the Hornaday 180gr RN bullets pushed by 62.5gr of H4350. I'll be using it to hunt whitetails in Mississippi. I absolutely love mine. This will be my 1st year to hunt with it so I don't have any "war" stories, Maybe Ray Atkinson will chime in. He's taken game all other world with his. Here's a picture of mine. Unfortunately the stock is off being checkered right now, so it'll be wearing the factory stock this season. Terry

Buster, I have the brother to your rifle. Mine is also a '57, all original with the checkered metal butt plate. I used factory 180gr Winchester FailSafes to take kudu and springbok in Namibia in September. I had worked up a load using 180gr Woodleighs over 66gr of 4350, but the rifle liked the FailSafes better. With this load, it is about as accurate as my 6mm PPC

In my signature photo below, I'm also holding a Pre-64 M70 in 300H&H. I used it as my light rifle during my last safari to Zimbabwe. I ended up loading 220 grain Nosler partitions at 2,700 fps and also some 180 grain Barnes TSX's at about 3,000 fps. My rifle shoots sub-MOA with both of these loads. I could not really tell the difference between the two loads by the reaction of the game that I shot. With this rifle, I took: Zebra Bushbuck Impala Warthog Kudu Baboon As you can see from the above list, the rifle should be very effective on elk and mule deer sized game in Utah. At the ranges I was hunting, most shots under 100 yards, a 30-06 would have performed the same. However, it just seemed like a much more classic cartridge to take to Africa. You have a great rifle chambered in a great cartridge, enjoy! Oh yeah, order up some dies and brass, the 300 H&H is a handloading venture. Tim

TCI, Be sure to post more pictures of that stock when it comes back. I like to look at that wood. I have a similar stock but it's on a Ruger

TC1, that's a beautiful rifle! I'd really like to see pictures of it after the stock is checkered. VFR, you're the second person I've heard from who has had great luck with the Failsafe's. I plan on handloading for the .300H&H to maximize it's potential, but I'll have to give the Failsafe's a try. Does your rifle kick like a mule with the steel butt plate? Mine came from the factory with a solid red Winchester recoil pad (Not sure if it was special order or not?), which is definately softer than steel, but by no means "soft". I've got 16 of the original box of 20 180gr Winchester SilverTips that my father-in-law got along with the rifle in 1957. I'm planning to take it out this weekend and see how it shoots. I've also got dies and brass on the way, so I'll start working up some loads. Shumba, the list of game you've taken with the .300H&H is impressive. I think the .300H&H with 180gr bullets will be just the ticket for deer and elk. Is your rifle factory original? How long have you had it? Thanks for the input.

Hi I got a Win Model 70 from a limited run in 1988. It is truly the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. The best combinations for this rifle are; 150gr / IMR4064 AA3100 165gr / Rx19 AA3100 180gr / IMR4831 220gr / H-4831 For general purpose hunting I use the 180gr Nosler Partition For long range antelope I use the 150gr Nosler Bal-Tip For elk in timber I still have a few boxes of W-W 220gr Silvertip factory that shoot very well.

Friends- If I had to give away all of my .30 caliber magnums except for one, I would keep the .300 H&H. I have an early 1960's Model Sako with an FN Mauser action chambered in .300 H&H. It clover-leafs groups all day long. The rifle is all original down to the Lyman Alaskan scope with, in this case, the German post recticule. Based on my recollection, I am shooting 165 gr. Hornady's over 69 grains or so of H4831 and getting 3265 fps out of a 24 in barrel. I am in the process of building a new .300 H&H using a M1917 Enfield action; I can't wait to get it going. TCI, your model 70 is a beauty. I knew we were going to be buddies and given your affinity for the .300 H&H well, welcome to the club. TC1, where did you get that lovely stick of wood. Here's to the .300 H&H, Cheers!!!!

Hey Mark, The stock came out of the "bargain bin" at Great American Gunstocks I went out yesterday and shot a few groups with the factory LT stock back on it. Just wanted to make sure everything was going to be OK since I had to change stocks. The groups went like this, All 4 shot groups with Hornaday 180gr round nose bullets @100 lasered yards. 1st group 0.504" 2nd group 0.625" 3rd group 0.770" 4th group 0.561" I swear this thing just gets better the more I shoot it! She's on and I'm ready. I had mine built after reading all the stuff Ray Atkinson has written about his. After owning one myself (especially this tac driver) it's hard for me to imagine how the .300WinMag ever displaced this fine round. Terry

My Custom 300 H&H pre 64 model 70, so worn out it looks like a combination of drift wood and stainless steel (no blue left) and shows the rigors of many hunts horseback, and in several corners of the world is one of my all time favorite rifles... I settled a long time back on the 200 gr. Nosler at near 3000 FPS and the 220 gr. Nosler at a good 2700 FPS. with a couple of 220 gr. Woodliegh solids in my pocket when hunting Africa...and they came in handy on an outstanding buffalo one late evening..A great caliber that has never let me down... I lent it to one of my clients, and elderly gentleman that can't handle a lot of recoil..He killed a 46 inch Sable on day one, a 63 inch Kudu and a 46 inch Buffalo the next day and went home..I would just like to follow him around and shoot his leftovers...BTW he forgot I gave him 220 gr. solids and softs and just shot everything with the solids..complained it didn't kill them as quick as he thought it would, some ran a hundred yards! I told him sometimes it just happens like that and let it go...
