Well guys, if I am measuring this correctly I got my first .5" group ever! I think somebody told me you measure the outside of the holes at the greatest distance and subtract bullet diameter. So it would be .8125 - .308 = .5045 Two holes touched and the other shot was only 3/32 off.
I figured not bad considering how I normally shoot. I had the front end rested and a folded sleeping bag helping me support the butt. This is a sporterized 03' I bought used with a muzzle break on it. I just mounted a Unertl Hawk on it and was sighting it in. What a great rifle, found a new hunting friend!

Those old Springfields will surprise you once in a while. I have one that loves 150 gr Ballistic Tips over 52.0 gr of IMR-4064. Not that fast, just under 2900 FPS, but half-inch groups pretty often.
Those Springfields were as good as any other bolt action, they are basically a Mauser, just like a M-70 pre 64....I have seen a lot of Springfields with two groove rifling shoot sub minute of angle when topped with a scope...and most shot into 2 inches or less with iron sights.
