I have never shot a 338-378. Using a brake, what caliber does the 338-378 recoil similar?

A lot depends on the weight of the rifle and what style muzzle brake. My .338 edge kicks less then a .243 due to the weight and the yuge muzzle brake attached to the end. I would think that an average 8lb rifle with an average muzzle brake would kick about as much as a stout 30-06, maybe more. If you are looking to tame the beast, I would recommend the following brakes: Xtreme V brake- http://www.straightshotgunsmithing.com/page14 Fat Bastard- https://www.americanprecisiona...s/fat-bastard-brake/ 5 port painkiller- http://www.apsrifles.com/Paink...uzzle_Brakes_QY.html "though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will to be rightful must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal law must protect, and to violate would be oppression." ---Thomas Jefferson

Don't forget your earplugs.....ALWAYS, even when hunting. I was on a bench two down from a 338-378 with a brake and even with plugs and muffs I left after the second shot. The blast is viscous.

Brakes are a good thing and have a place in the gun world to help people shoot accurately, they do increase noise but a 338-378 is damn loud not matter what..A brake has to work pretty hard to tame that big case, IMO they work best up to about a 338 or 375, less on the 458 etc. and I suspect they wouldn't work great on the 338-378, but I may be wrong, and that would depend on the shooter as recoil can be plumb personal.. I.have three 338-378 weatherby accumarks and hunted with them in Alaska 12 years .It kicks like a 270 to me with 250 grain bullets .I use plugs and muffs to target shoot .I use ear muffs to hunt with it or vert good plugs .That cAliber is awesome mine shoot under an inch at 300 yards .The 300 grain bullets kick pretty good with.the brake on.it.They weatherby accumarks are the best rifle for Alaska in the tundra and mountains .I am glad I.got them .Mine like weatherby partitions 250 grain and 109 grains of reloader 25 and federal 215 primers shoots super accurate !I have 6.5x20 Nikon monarchs on.Mine and 5.5x16.5 Nikon monarchs on.others .

I have an A-Square rifle in 338 A-Square Mag caliber. That's nearly the same as a .338-378 WBY cal. My rifle has a VAIS Muzzle Brake. Using 160g Barnes bullets at 3650 fps results in recoil being about the same as 308 Win. " .... you never pay too much for something, you only buy it too early .... I am a recoil sissy and I like the 338-378 with a brake. it still pushes pretty good, but it's like getting pushed in the shoulder versus punched in the face.

I.can shoot my 338-378 one handed with 200 grain bullets tried it without brake it kicks pretty good .Friends who.had 338-378 put heavier 28 inch barrel on them took off the brake .I want a 30 inch barrel 338-378 weatherby it adds about 300-400 fps really makes it way better long range no brake but better not take it in the timber too long .I liked the 338-378 In Alaska better than any.other gun made !

Never shot a braked 338-378, I have an old 28" barreled custom going on it's second Shilen barrel, 300 grain Accubonds at 3000 fps are manageable if the gun fits you. When the day comes my shoulder is no longer stronger than my ears I'll drop down in power.

I have both KDF brakes and mechanical or mercury reducers in the stocks of my .300 Weatherby and my .375 RUM. I often shoot both my .300 Wby and my .308 Win at the same shooting session at the range. Both are Weatherby Vanguards and both are the same weight and have the same fit for me. The felt recoil of the .300 Wby is less than the felt recoil of the .308 Win. The first time I took my .375 RUM to the range (factory wood stock and no brake or reducer), I quit shooting after only 6 rounds, The recoil just plain hurt! I then put a custom laminated stock that fits me on it with the recoil reducer, and had the KDF brake n it. That tamed the recoil enough that I was able to develop sub moa loads for it with 270 and 300 grain TSX bullets and 300 grain Partitions at 3000 fps, and 270 grain Sierras for practice. I then took it on 2 African hunts where I shot 17 animals including several from prone positions, and all without any uncomfortable recoil. My first hunt with my .375 RUM was in Zimbabwe, and when I was checking it's zero, AR member bcolyer was along filming the hunts for that PH, and he mentioned that I was the only hunter that they had that season that stayed tight in his gun after the shots.
