It did not go well for him.

10-points (G-4 on the right barely makes an inch.) 205# dressed on my scale. Not a huge rack, but what a pig!

He stepped out @ 4:25. 240 yds down the lane. I could tell it was a buck by the shape & when I put the glass on him, I saw enough antler to make the choice. The whole thing took less than 5 seconds to go down.

I sent a 200gr .323 Speer Hot-Cor on his way @ 2900 fps. Hit him a bit far back, clipping the liver as the bullet ranged forward taking out both lungs. He went down like a ton of bricks & never even got close to getting back up.

Nice buck! Let me guess the caliber: 8mm-06 AI?
My BRNO ZG42 in 8X64 has much the same effect on our local white tails.

The clue for me was 200 grain .323” @ 2900fps. Pretty easy to narrow down the round. Ackleyrizing the 8x57 never made much sense because ‘06 brass is so much more plentiful, rechambering is so easy, and you get more poop to boot. I’m content with 8x57 performance, but there is no denying the merits of rechambering to 8mm-06 imp.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

It was difficult to puzzle out of your mysteriously impenetrable, maddening vague in the manner of Lovecraft himself, opening post but I also managed to guess 8mm-06 AI too. Big Grin

Glad to hear you got shooting your recently assembled 8mm-06 Ackley. Great caliber. I like mine very much. I have a question about your buck. What would an average size buck in your area weigh field dressed ? 205 lbs does not seem like a huge deer to me. I am from Manitoba and I realize the further north you go the larger animals get. An average buck around here would be in the 200 to 225 lbs field dressed and a buck that dresses out around 250 is not uncommon. Every now and then a big buck is taken that will dress around 300 lbs or even a little more. Just curious what the norm is around your area.

Average would be from 140-180#. Anything over 180# dressed would be considered large. Occasionally one will turn up dressing 240+. 200# is somewhat if a benchmark in this area. Bucks seldom live past about 4 1/2 years old. The area is sparsely populated but tracts of more than 5 square miles are rare. The West end of my property is located in a block that is about 1 1/2 miles by 3 miles between roads with houses scattered along them. There is not a lot of agricultural fields with those there are being corn hat is chopped for silage/balage leaving little for the deer.

I have killed 3 1/2 year old bucks that dressed 142# & 190#. My largest was a 219# 4 1/2 year old 4-point. Racks in this are tend to be small.

Congrats! That would be a huge deer here in Maryland, too. Great looking rifle, also! Really like the lines of that stock.
