Looking at Lyman ed. 49 manual and its OAL for a 125 grain bullet puts the seating off of the cannelure by about .030 of an inch. I was of the mind that the crimp should be into the cannelure. I am shooting Win. 94. With pressure and tubular magazine considerations, any thoughts?

The 30-30 wasn't designed for the lighter bullets, it was designed for 150 and 170 gr. bullets to be crimped in the cannalure grooves. That said, crimp the 125s in the cannalure and let them jump to the rifling..you hear so much about that jump lending to inaccuracy, however in many, many cases that jump has no effect what-so-ever on accuracy, especially on a big game rifle.. I have long throated rifles so that I can seat bullets way out like a 7x57 and a .338 win, they both shoot the short factory ammo and short handloads to the same POI and with the same accuracy, so I look upon the subject with a jaundice eye as O'Connor used to say! In a tubular magazine use the crimp groove or recoil will usually push your bullits back into the case to one degree or another, and that can sure cause a jam or worse yet its dangerous as pressure becomes and issue. Factory ammo comes in 125 gr. bullets these days and I used it for my kids to shoot my 30-30 and it shot fine, and crimped in the groove. Ray, thanks so much for your time and effort. Like you, the rifle will mainly be shot for the fun of it....by my grandson. I have loaded 150 and 170 grain bullets, just wanted some for the kids.

One of my boys shot several deer with my 30-30 and factory 125 gr. bullets..my daughter liked them even though she had no clue what she was shooing and she shot at least one buck with them, broke his neck running at about 100 yards after her brother and a friend missed him several times, Wow!, did she get and is still getting a lot of milage over that..He says "Dad, will she ever just let it go?" I said "why would she" Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

What a great message! Shooting with my grandkids is very heartwarming and gives our 2nd amendment rights hope for the future. That must have been a big boost for your daughter. Thanks for sharing and giving me a smile for the day!

If you are using pointed 125 grain bullets; don't put more than one in the mag anyway.

Walleye, If you are just shooting at the range with your grand kids and are looking for light recoiling loads then you should look at shooting cast lead bullets with a reduced charge weight of something like Trail Boss or pistol powder. They are like shooting .22LR at that point and fun for kids who are a bit recoil sensitive.

I'd just add a canellure in the appropriate place.

PLus 1 on dpcd's post, don't use spitzer, there are Speer 130 gr. FN Hot cores, Sierra 125 FNHP,to name a few and I suspect thats what your using...I purchased 20 boxes of Fed factory 125 gr. HP FN at a sale for $8.00 a box some time ago and thats what the girls shoot..Performance wise its a decent 150 yard deer bullet btw..
