will be purchasing a Sako Finnlight in .300 win. mag. to-morrow, was just wondering what kind of a shooter it will be, 22.5 in. barrel????hope i made rite decision, it was a toss-up between it and the 75 s.s.in .300 ultra. (to heavy)i'm sure the winnie will be sufficent for moose here in Ontario. Is the winnie known for poor or good accuracy? Any info would be appreciated, Thank's: Rick.

Richard Wayne Sir, I have wondered about the finnlight in calibers like 300 WM and even 7mmRM. Doesnt the short barrel hamper the effectiveness of those calibers ? And due to the light weight of the weapon, wont it kick like a mad mule ?
Accuracy will probably be great as with all Sako products but my feeling is that a 30-06 would be just as effective with that short 22.5" barrel. If I were to purchase a Sako in either 300WM or 300RemUM I would definitely rather go for the 75 ss with a fully grown barrel instead.

Regards

I tend to agree with GBF about barrel length vs caliber choice.

Finnlights also come with some fairly slim barrels. That is always somewhat "risky" in a factory gun - even a Sako.

I have heard the Finnlight stocks are not supposed to be as stiff as some (after market, higher end) stocks. This is also a factor in accuracy. See whether you can get the stock to touch the barrel with your hand (assuming the barrel is floated). If yes, then you might need to come up with a fix for that.

As long as your expectations about accuracy are "realistic" - maybe 1.5" 3 shot groups(?), nobody can really predict this - then you probably won't be disappointed. After all, this kind of accuracy always has been and always will be perfectly adequate for big game hunting. With luck, the rifle may even shoot better than that.

I was on this super light gun search for some time. Saw a few finlights shoot and was not impressed. So I went with the Browning Medallion. Not that much heavier, but very accurate. I got 300UM and Win, in 700 BDL's, and would really consider a full size 75 in these calibers. Keep the Finlite in calibers like 308, and 7mm-08.

We are 3. Friends that all hunt with Sako in 300 WM, two of use 75 dl and the third one uses a Finnlight. There is no question that the short barrel is unable to burn all the powder and when we are shooting in evenings the short one is like a flamethrower plus it kicks a lot more. My 15 years old daughter likes to shot my 300 WM with 150gr bullets. See started training with my sako heavy barrel in 222 rem and then to the 300 [Wink]

The Finnlight stock is a lightened version (read: thinner material) of the 75's injection-molded plastic. Of course it is not as stiff as well-made graphite/kevlar/fibreglass......

I was thinking about a Finnlight also, What are your opinions on the Finnlight in the 300WSM? Would the case configuration and the way the powder burns change anything with the short barrel or recoil?

Richard, I would go along with Big Country, keep this model for standard short action calibres. I lived in northern Ontario for many years and for the distances you'll be shooting you would be well served with a plain jane .30-06. Most of us back then were using .303's.

Far as I know, the Finnlight doesn't come from the factory in .300 WSM and can't be rechambered to it either, due to the small bolt face on the short Sako actions.

Kevral, I spoke with a couple of distributors and they both said the Finnlight in 300 WSM is scheduled to be out in September of this year.
