Perhaps...flavor of the month is appropriate. Gonna be a lot of nice 7 rem mags and 300 win mags traded in on this stuff. Get some good deals on used rifles. swede

flick... I have heard nothing but good things, however I know of only 2 people directly that own any of the cartridges mentioned. Like many new cartidges there are always more people who own them then there are rifles. What is interesting to me is seeing which ones die off first, though they will always exist in one form or another (wildcat). Any cartridge regardless, is always nice to see if it gets people interested in shooting. One cartridge for the life of me I am not sure why exists... the 17HRM.It has no efficacious advantage over a 22 mag and you have exactly one plastic bullet to buy for it.

take care... smallfry
you might be a redneck if........... your DGR is a Marlin Guide Gun. [Big Grin]

I hear nothing but bad things about them, high pressure, poor feeding, less velocity than the real mags. Ammo will be hard to find, and more expensive with less performance.

I have no personal experience with the short fat rounds, but I would expect feeding to be more problematic than with longer cartridges. I expect that feed angles and release points will be far more critical. I would expect better accuracy, since short fat rounds tend to provide more uniform ignition of the powder charge. As far as ammo costs are concerned, once a good supply of rifles and ammo hits the selves, the prices will come down.

I have a 338 Jamison and a 338WSM both on M70 actions. Neither has feeding problems though it was essential to have the right follower in the magazine. Perhaps the push feeds could be expected to have some hang up in process of chambering but the controlled feeds inherently overcome that problem. Those problems which have been reported with the WSM's I believe originate mostly with the stamped magazine boxes with the lips not being quite right.

Flick;
Be careful what you read, especially from someone who does not "own" or has shot one of the new (WSM's). Yes, I own one and gave it a pretty good test on feeding rounds. I took the first box of factory rounds and ran them through the magazine to chamber, all worked just fine! Next test was to seat some bullets in those once fired cases (There was enough neck tension to hold a bullet withought resizing) I seated some short and some long and test fed those through the rifle, short ones work great and long ones too! I even mixed short and long and experienced no problems. [Big Grin]

GSF,

I like my 7MM WSM a lot. I did have bedding problems with the M70's plastic stock but I corrected them. It feeds very well and has all the velocity one would expect.

I really like my .270 WSM

It is as advertised...accurate and 200-250fps faster than an already awesome .270 Win..

Read about it here

I can say only good things about my M70 .300 WSM. Much, much better gun that my former POS Savage 110 or 111 model .300 Win. Mag (it was a package gun). I ended up selling that gun for more than what I payed for it. [Big Grin]

This was my second year whitetail hunting with my M-70 FWT in 300 WSM. Killed antlers early this year and last year with my flintlock so the WSM was relegated to does. It has accounted for 3 deer to date. All average size animals 100-130 lbs. Ranges from 80 to 250 yards. On such smallish animals the 300 WSM is an overmatch and as expected it performed flawlessly. But I plan on taking this rifle to Africa in a year for plains game so I want to feel confident in the gun in the field.
I shoot 180 grain Hornady SSTs behind a max charge of R-22. That load does an honest 2990-3004 fps over my chrony. The gun shot sub-moa out of the box. I glass bedded the action and free floated the barrel and replaced the 3.5-10 Zeiss with a 1.1-4 Kahles today. The gun shot 3 teensy 5 shot groups with all the bullets touching except for one called flier. Its scary accurate and velocity wise will keep pace with any 300 Win Mag I've owned in the 150-180 grain bullet range.
Had a feeding problem when it was new...shipped it back and Winchester fixed it and sent it back in 3 weeks. Not a single problem since. I'm thrilled with the rifle right now and the smallish Kahles scope with a 30 mm tube really balances well on the FWT stock.

Friend of mine bought one of the M70 laminated stock models in the Speedy Gonzalez caliber, 270 WSM.

However, as he found out, a miss is a miss at any velocity!

By the way, that laminated stock fits me the best of any stock I've ever tried. Man, does it feel good.
