Guys,
Bare with me as I try and sort the thoughts out in my head. But does anyone have experience with this cartridge in a bolt-actioned rifle? I'm considering one as the best option amongst the small capacity .30s like the 30BR, 308x1.5", 30/223 etc... I'd be using it as a beginner's target rifle at the range and some informal benchrest shooting, plus some short-distance varminting against foxes/hares etc to 150yards... mostly under a spotlight on smallish dairy farms where noise can be a concern at times. The option to use cast projectiles in .30cal is also a bonus. Any reason why I shouldnt have a 300Whisper put together? In a Rem700, I anticipate if it was a total failure I could always open the bolt-face a smidgen, and have the rails worked and then re-chamber to a .308 bore 7.62x39.
Thoughts???
Cheers...

If I didn't have a 223 to use for that.. I think I'd stick with the 308 bolt face and do a 30 BR...

With fast powder you can download it to 300 Whisper specs... if that is what ya need to do..

It is a marvelous little cartridge. Perfect with a suppressor.

You need a barrel with a 1:8" twist. 16 1/2# is plenty of length.

I have one on an AR-15 platform. I am getting one put together using a Mini-Mauser action next year, for just the purposes that you describe. Perfect for 'roo and deer poaching as well (if you are so inclined).

You can use 110 grain to 125 grain varmint bullets for low recoil work during the day light hours.

No intention to poach or use a silencer ... just like the idea of a light varminter that puts .30cal holes in game Big Grin. Most of its use will be super-sonic loads utilising the 110gr V-max or 125gr Nosler BT. Is 2400fps achieveable in a 22" barrel? That would give me 200yards of useable range and I bet its quieter than a 22/250. I will use a 1:8" twist ... might as well play with some sub-sonic loads but definately without the "spark arrestor" which Govt dont trust us with. Honestly dont see myself using the sub-sonic loads for anything other than a laugh. Donor rifle is a Rem700 currently in 17Rem ... hence the preference for the small bolt faced cartridge.
Cheers...

I've only used one in a handgun. I don't have any data handy, but figuring you'll gain about 25 fps per inch of barrel, you shouldn't have much problem getting 2400 w/ 110's, they show 2400 w/ 125's here http://www.quarterbore.com/300whisper/index.html and I believe that's a shorter than 22" tube.

Here's some data from a 22" barrel, right on AR http://www.accuratereloading.com/300whisper.html
