Looking for some information on the 7mm06. Must admit I haven't heard of this one s I figure it wasn't around long. What was the problem with it? Why did it not survive?

In practicle terms the 280 Rem and the 7mm-06 are the same thing. Don't try to interchange cartridges though there are just enough differences to cause serious headspace issues. Remington actually manufactured brass with the 7mm-06 headstamp and immediatly stopped and recalled them. They are a pretty serious collectors item now though as they were very few that ever got out.

Keep them seperate.

Not exactly!

When Remington was first developing the 280/7mm Express/280 it was indeed just a "necked down" "06" case and from what I have read, it was to be named 7mm-06.

However, when it was discovered that when certain tolerences were compounded (minimum cartridge size/maximum chamber size) "Bubba" might chamber a 280 round in a 270 rifle. This of course could lead to severly elevated pressure and possible case/action failure leading to lawsuits etc.

The shoulder was moved forward .050" to preclude this happening.

Winchester had exactly the same "brainfart" with the 270WSM and 7mmWSM, leading to the delay of releasing the later. In Winchester's scenerio it seems that they should have learned from Remington's mistake and avoided the problem in the first place! homer

Perhaps the engineers working on the WSMs had little real "gun" backround. Roll Eyes
