Looking for data on the 30/30 using 180 grain bullets out of a single shot rifle for deer 100 yds max. Which 180's work well with 30/30 velocitys

Funny you should mention that. YOu can use data for a 170 and back off about 5 %. One of the most accurate powders that I have found for the 30/30 tho has been SR 4759, from IMR. I have done load data for the 170 and 180 and the 220 grain round noses, single shot loading. Bullets were seated to the cannelure. Large rifle primers used. ( CCIs). This is out of a Model 94s 20 inch barrel. 11 grs: 992 fps 12 grs: 1120 fps 13 grs: 1243 fps 14 grs: 1361 fps 15 grs: 1447 fps 16 grs: 1562 fps 17 grs: 1633 fps 18 grs: 1753 fps 19 grs: 1817 fps 20 grs: 1876 fps 21 grs: 1936 fps 22 grs: 2001 fps 23 grs: 2096 fps 24 grs: 2151 fps Work up to the these loads. These were safe and fed singlely in a Model 94 winchester, 1966 production. Bullets were seated to the cannelure, so will not cycle in a lever action, as they are too long. Accuracy was fantastic for this rifle, which is usually horrible. Definitely the most accurate powder I have tried reloading a 30/30. Pressure should be safe as I have also worked up 220 grain Round Nose loads using up to the same volume of powder, 24 grains. Even though they would not cycle in a 30/30 the breech had no problem swallowing the bullet seated longer than normal 30/30 lengths. All cases extracted easily and resized full length in the sizing die easily also, indicating no excessive pressure. These load were with a Round Nose bullet but also have done the same with Remington Corelokts, just not done the chronograph work with that bullet. Cheers and good shooting seafire

Given the modest speed and the short distances you mention, I suspect any of the RN bullets would do. Hornady makes them.

If your talking 180s, the velocity isn't going to be very high so, I would definitely get a easy expander. Since it is a single shot I would try the NBTs. They should till open fine at those low velocities. I have had the best accuracy w/ Remington CLs and H4895 out of my Marlin 336. If I had a single shot 30-30, I'd probably shoot the Pointed bullets out of it but, at the range you are talking the round noses will work fine. Good Luck! Reloader
