I just received a Winchester 1894 in 30 WCF which was made in 1896. The gun is well used but in decent shape, considering it is over 100 years old. I plan on getting the action checked before firing for safety sake but had a question.

Is the 30 WCF (Winchester Center Fire)the same as a 30-30 Win or was there a slight modification? Can you shoot 30-30 rounds through a 30WCF?

30 W(inchester) C(enter) F(ire) is the origional name for the 30-30.
Just like 45 A(utomatic) C(olt) P(istol) is the same as the 45 Auto

Yes that's a 30/30. I have had one like that. Mine was made in 1895 and it's a take down. The bore on mine is rotten. I have fired it and the bullets hit the target point on at 50 yds.

Great, thanks guys! This gun is actually for my grandson who will be one year old tomorrow. Of course he won't be shooting it any time soon. [Wink]

His great-grandfather just picked it up for him. I'd like to start working on it to clean it up and maybe bring it back to it's original glory. I first want to make sure that it's safe to shoot for obvious reasons.

I guess I'll be asking lots of questions as I go on this project.

I have a similar 94 in 30 WCF that is in very rough shape. It looks like someone without the skill to operate a screwdriver worked over each one of the
screw heads, and hit most of the surfaces with a coarse file; this looks atrocious and I would like to replace these screws, and refinish the rifle. I will be rebarreling it in a couple of weeks, but I don't have the time or patience to replace all of the little screws and other parts, and do the refinishing myself. Can anyone recommend a gunsmith that does good work on win 94's.
The plan is to have it restocked and teflon coated as well, I am preferably looking for someone in Canada to do this work.
thanks [Smile]

Thomas; Why not just buy another one in good shape, $$ is down right now so you should be able to pick one up for $3-400cdn in nice shape?

the idea is not necessarily to be cost effective so much as get the rifle I want.

I have a few ideas for the old 30-30

Most folks would be surprised how well some bad, ugly and nasty bores shoot...I have my grandads 30-30 from his Texas Ranger days, the bore looks like the inside of the chimney on a tramp steamer and it will shoot 3 shots in an inch every time at 100 yards, and thats with iron sights!!!!!...

I have seen some English bolt guns, double rifles, 9.3, 318's, 333's etc. from the cordite days that group like a bench rest rifle...you gotta try'em before you pass judgement....

The bores on my 404, 9.3x62 Husqvarna, and Sweet Thang, show a little cordite dust and they are extremely accurate....and I have never seen a double as consistantly accurate or as un-tempermental to different loads as "Sweet Thang" is. She would shoot handloaded beer cans in a one shot hole.
