With the Help of
AR Contributor custombolt , I now have 300 of my favorite deer bullet for my favorite caliber the .308 Win.
So I think I will try and come up with a compromise load That shoots well in both my .308 rifles. One is a Savage 99F from around 1960, the other is a CZ 557 sporter.
Stared of with a great stroke of luck when i discovered a slightly long seating depth feeds and chambers in both rifles. Speers book says 2.700 and i am at 2.810. Starting off with 46.5 grs of RL-15,
If i can get close to 2800 fps and say , 1.25 inch from the CZ and 1.50 from the savage, I will load up 100 and keep them always in my jeep,
Then i will be ready for just about any adventure Oregon has to offer a .308 shooter.
I would not be at all surprised if both rifles shoot this load better than the 1.25 and 1.50 i am hoping for. The book max for RL-15 is 49 grains, but for the savage that might be a little to hot.
If this powder does not get the results i am hoping for, i have a ton of IMR 4064, and W-748 But RL-15 from my experience give great accuracy , good Velocity and less Recoil than the other two ..
all opinions Welcome...

TJR, I don't think you can get anywhere near 2800 ft/sec using IMR4064. I have a load for my A-bolt in 308 using this powder and I started losing accuracy above 2425 ft/sec and high pressure signs quickly after that. Your results may be totally different than mine, but I will have to see it to believe.

What if you worked on the most accurate load possible in the Bolt Action that was within reason velocity wise for the lever gun then see how well it shoots for the lever.
You might get lucky.
What bullet are you shooting?

i plan to post the results ,
But Bartch, as i recall you are not a fan of my favorite cartridge, did you suddenly come to your senses ? Bullet is the Speer 150 grain hot core.
I took a huge Mule deer with it from my Savage a couple years ago, bout 200 yards , shot was pretty high , not my best ever, but the buck was dead in about 10 seconds anyway. You might see my previous thread about needing a new deer bullet. Not now ! i ordered an Rcbs competition seating die seating die cause my oal varies more than i like and the bullet nose gets a bit dinged up...

I get 2900fps with either 46.5grs of Varget or 45.5grs of TAC with a 150gr Nosler BT in my CZ 308 rifle. Both loads are great, but I have to give Varget a very tiny slight edge.

I would go with varget myself for a truck gun/load.

Temp insensitivity would be important... as I recall the older IMR powders are fairly temp sensitive, and RL 15 is quite also.

TJ, the 99s with new brass will work sometimes with bolt action loads, but after a few firings they will separate in the chamber...My rule of thumb is load the 99 two grs. less than book max seems to work very well and you don't lose much velocity..The 99s allow brass to stretch and the die overworks the brass..Ive separated cases with 46 grs. of RL-15 on about the third reloading, also one must check for length in the 99, it needs to be managed, but its such a nice rifle its worth the trouble.

My only combination load that I use in bolt guns and Lever guns is the 150 gr. bullets loaded with 48 grs of WW-748, it works well enough in any .308..and gives decent velocity and good accuracy..Kills well also..I like WW powerpoints, corelokts, Accubonds, partitions, they have all proved to kill very well in my .308s..

If we would just get a bit of rain, i could go shoot these rifles and see how it works out.
The Forests are just to dry ! i need to put a lift on my Cherokee , to help keep the exast from stating a fire.
I think i will go to a commercial range next week just if i need to. But i like to get out in the forest , Ray, your advise is good. I have gone with a 1.5 grains of extra safety margin on my 99. But i will bow to you experience.
And 748 is one of my very favorite powders in .308. But RL-15 is more or less as good, and i find it recoils less. So if i take a girl friend shooting, that is help full..
