I have both short actions and long actions, I don't think a 1/4 lb makes a difference. If I wanted to lose some weight, I'd take it off my middle and leave rifle alone. I carry a 10lb rifle and could stand to lose about a 100lbs myself, my choice, as is your rifle. I have a 7/08 next on my list for short action.

Jimmy,

Please explain what you mean about being "gun shy" over the .358? Also what did you mean that the .338 "has more shoulder"? I have found that the .358W. has plenty of shoulder for any chambering requirements.

As to the magazine length of the 84M it will take a round to about 2.81" and that should hold just about any reasonable bullet. Don't over react on that.

Now as to the cartridge itself just about anything will improve on the .223 on deer. I do question that. Your choice of the 7-08 would be just fine.

With the Kimber magazine box at 2.81 can you load a 160 grain Barnes TSX in the 7-08? A 120 cup and core to 160 grain Barnes would be pretty good.

The .358 win I had went back to the factory due to a headspace disagreement. The company said I was wrong but agreed to refund my money.

How do they get the .257 roberts to work in that gun with a 2.81 magazine length.

On the .223 we can just agree to disagree!

Jimmy, what do you mean by justify?
I once justified 5 Marlin 30-30. I currently have two and a 35 Rem.
I have justified one 25-06, two .270 Wins, and two 30-06’s.
I have justified one .257 Roberts, one 7x57, one 8x57, one 9.3x62.
I’m currently trying to decide what to build next a .280 Rem or a .35 Whelen.
I’m also currently trying to decide what to buy next a 9x57 or a 9.3x57.
So Jimmy, I say if you want it, it’s justified, buy it!!!

No, you can't justify it. There is nothing one will do that the other one won't. Also, you can't hunt but with one at a time.

Now stop trying to justify it and decide if it's really what you want. beer

Jimmy P Coaltrain:

As you see, you have run into another bunch of 270 lovers! (me included)

Honestly, what puzzles me is why a WT and pig shooter needs anything else. I realize that I'm a "damyankee" talking to a "Reb" -but we do have an expression up here - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Smiler

Anyway, regards and I hope you get your new rifle -which you intend to get anyway. You just want us to help out with arguments with your wife! Smiler

what would be a cartridge of real meaning?
Down scale; a 250-3000 or even a .257 Roberts. beer
Something with a little more authority : 35 Wehlen or a 9.3 X 62.

And he's right! "**all there is are the words**" fishingroger

Bartsche I am in agreement. The Kiimber in .257 Roberts makes more sense to me today than a 7-08! My .270 is just too accurate and too good of a gun. With Nosler 130 grain flatbase bullets and H4831 it shoots very good, there is not a deer that I could not shoot with this load with the Zeiss Conquest rapid Z600 riflescope on top of it. Now laugh if you want but my .270 is sold under the name Weatherby MarkV, hate the plastic stock but it do shoot.

Any reason/excuse to buy a new rifle is a good one. Buy it, enjoy, life is short.
