I'm looking for a new rifle (factory made - not custom) with the following characteristics: 24" barrel, 30-06, stainless or blued, no sights, a better grade synthetic stock (not like those on a M70 or M700 as I have both), trigger which I can adjust as opposed to taking it to a smith, hinged floor plate, and MOA or at least close to MOA in accuracy. I'll give this gun to my SIL sometime after Christmas. So, what would you suggest? Thanks

Hey LB

These people, Stockersguns, selling this gun had a Beretta Mato in 30-06 not too long ago for auction and I think they did not sell it. The Mato is discontinued now but it has a Lothar Walthar barrel, HS Precision stock, Dakota 97 action (CRF with 3 position wing safety), and Shilen adjustable trigger. I have 2 now in 300 win mag and 338 win mag and they are excellent guns that will increase in value through the years, IMO.

If you called them up, you could probably get it for $800.00.

They are overpriced, but now that they're sufficiently de-bugged I would have no problem recommending the Sako model 75.

My second choice would be Remington's Sendero, but that doesn't quite fit your criteria.

I hear good things about Savage's "accutrigger", but know nothing about their synthetic stocks.

I like the Sako 75. But we just bought a Tika for my BIL for Christmas. It fits all of your want list except the hinged floor plate. It has a detachable magazine instead.

As usual just my $.02

Outside of the fact it sounds like you do not like the syn stock on the Rem 700 SPS I would suggest that. It has everything you want and it would be easy to restock with a high end drop in syn.

Get a M-70 and put it in a McMillan or Bordon rimrock stock

How about considering the Howa weatherby. I don't know what the story is on the trigger but they get constant good reviews and appear to be a heck of a rifle for the dollar.

Big GrinRight now I'm really high on Savage and Stevens 200 for that matter. The accutrigger on the Savage is sweet. The stevens' trigger is a little hard but the rifles seem to have great out of the box accurracy. thumbroger

Men - thanls for the great suggestions. I have a few questions.
1. The stocks on the 2004 Rem SS and the 2004 Win Classic Stainless (both of which I own) felt too soft and my smith told me torquing the screws to 35#s did little good as these stocks "give" to the pressure (perhaps he is wrong, but the factory stock on my M70 always felt soft and I just couldn't get consistent accuracuy until I changed the stock). I replaced these stocks with ones from HS Precision, but don't want to have to put another $300 stock on the rifle in question. Do the rifles which have been suggested have any form of bedding (pillar, etc.) which aids in accuracy?
2. What is the going price for a McMillan or Borben stock?
3. Regarding the Weatherby, can I expect the desired accuracy out of the standard Vanguard, or do I need the sub-moa version?
4. Savage has so many models, which model meets my criteria?
Thanks Men!

Check out the 114 classic in the Savage. Two problems 22 inch barrel and needs a new syn stock. Or the 116FHSS. Still a 22 inch barrel but has the syn stock. However I don't think it would be better than the other stocks you describe, but you would have the Savage accuracy which is next to none in my opinion. I like Savage rifles and it would be my choice if I were looking for a push feed.

The new weatherby vanguard is excellent for the money.Wow...I said weatherby and excellent and my tongue isn't bleeding...huh. Anyway, the regular vanguard has a great stock, and is still guaranteed to print 1 1/2", which is great accuracy for a hunting rifle (if we are being realistic). They are also selling great Talley one piece rings with this kit and I'll swear by them. Just toss on some good glass and start blasting.

Cann't you order a Vanguard now from Wby with different stocks etc?

I whole heartedly reccomend the Vanguard Sub-Moa. I had one in 257 Weatherby, but decided I didn't need so many similar rifles and sold it.

Very accurate. They make it in 30-06, 300, etc.
