Frustrated and m giving up on the 225gr AB. Running a Stiller Predator w Hart 1/14 tube in a 35Wheelen AI. After 150 rounds I just can't get the AB to shoot consistently. Man I'm bummed. Ya I know, get over it. THis is the first time I couldn't find a load that shoots the AB! I tried RL15, RL17, Varget....I found that driving them hard w. RL15 and Varget would get a shot dead on, next one an inch high or low and then third shot into the first hole, then another flier. Moving on to 225gr TSX and Sierra Game Kings! Anyone else have any problems getting the 225gr AB to shoot in their 35 W???????????

I also couldn't get the 225 AB to shoot well. I tried several different powders and tried different OAL, but nothing worked. Fotunately the 225 TSX and several 250 grain bullets worked fine.

The only consistent accubond load in my 35 Whelen is 61gr h4350 for 2513 fps average.

I'm quite surprised.....I'm getting superb groups with 225 partitions /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." The best 225 in my Whelen is the old Ballistic Tip, followed by the Partition and the Sierra. I can not get the accubond under 2".

Give them a try using H-380, I'm getting 5/8" groups at 100 yards with AB's. Extreme Custom Gunsmithing LLC, ecg@wheatstate.com

Vapo: I was so freakin frustrated yesterday, what with trying to get pics posted, and also dealing with, UGH, a new computer and the GOD AWFUL Windows 7, I forgot to do the rotation. But we still made progress, thanks. As Stoneybroke stated, I also really like the 225 Nosler Ballistic tip, although the 225 Accubond is right there also. I like the Partitions, as well. But who knows the next time I'll get to shoot an elk with a cartridge rifle, can't get drawn here, so it's archery and muzzel loading if you want to hunt, at least in my case. I'd have to check but I think my 35 Whelen imp is 1-14 twist Adams and Benet barrel. What twist is your barrel? Extreme Custom Gunsmithing LLC, ecg@wheatstate.com

Biscut: I see you did not mention IMR4064. I have been shooting the same charge of IMR4064 since the 70's in my standard Whelen. IMR4064 seems to be getting lost in the shuffel these days, but it is worth considering. The load I use, and according to the manuals now, it may be a little hot, but in the Speer #8, it is midrange, is 56 grains. I use it with either the 225 or the 250 grain bullets. Groups with the Ballistic tip have always been sub 1" if I do my part, and the bullets hold together great. I recoverd a 225 BT out of an elk, and it weighed 206 grains. The AB shoots almost as well, and when I run out of BT'S, it will do very nicely. Regards Jerry NRA Benefactor Life Member

Hey Jerry, Congratulations on the Elk. I "agree" the 270Win is perfect for that size Elk.

What about this size? /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Winston Churchill

Funny thing, I thought that was a pretty good sized cow. 450 lbs or so, must be small compared to all the elk Hot's shot, LOL! This one is with a bow and arrow, the next one will be muzzel loader, and there you will really get to look at a good lookin Jose', me. Jerry NRA Benefactor Life Member

Hey Vapo, That is quite a rack. Darn shame about the story that goes along with it. ----- Hey Jerry, 450# - I don't think so. But if you are convinced it is, that's OK by me. Very impressed with you tossing a stick(or pipe) at it and making the Kill. Speaks well for your "sneaking ability". Is your Black Powder a 270?

Hot Core: Actually, I think I was being VERY conservative on the weight. And just to make things right, that is my son Steve in the picture. He scouted for 3 weeks before his hunt, and he actually used his plan "B", as other "COURTEOUS" hunters had plopped their butts in his blind, he had built, on the water hole he scouted all that time. The good news, they spooked the herd to the B spot, and he was able to connect with the heard, the rest is history. He might be the best hunter I know. I will be using a Ruger 77/50, with 2 pellets of Triple 7 and a Barnes 300 grain Sabot. Also I believe the quintessential elk cartridge to be the 35 Whelen, but the 270 Winchester is also stellar, as proved over and over again, by pictures like the one Vapo has posted.
