338-06 Opinions
I just picked up a Weatherby Ultralight in 338-06. New caliber to me. What are some opinions out there. I like the "odd" stuff and this qualifies! Thanks for any input!

Finn Aagard spoke very highly of it as a short range thumper.

210 gr ballistic tips and deer are a wonderful combination. It will do everything an 06 will with more energy.

If short range means 400 yards then I'd agree with Finn

I don't know. I've never shot a single head of BG at 400 yards and I know Finn didn't reccomend it. IIRC, he wrote of it as a back up rifle that a guide would carry in case the sport didn't do well.

It was my go to elk rifle prior to the release of the .338 Win..

I found it to be an excellent killer and about anything that walks. I suppose I'd call it a 400 yard gun if you can shoot, I think 300 yards is more realistic, but I also believe that under 99% of the circumstances you can sneak another 100 yards on any animal to 300...

I tried most of the loads but it performed best in every way with 210 Noslers at about 2800 FPS. If I intended to shoot heavier bullets then I'd opt for the .338 Win. but you always have the option of punching it out if you so desire..Its a great elk rifle as is...
