| Goat - your .358 Winchester is one of the most under appreciated hunting cartridges out there. A good hunting buddy of mine has a very impressive string of kills on big elk, mulies and a few black bear with his .358 BLR. His success is more remarkable when you understand that it's fairly open country where he hunts and the most common rifles are long .338's, .300 mags and 7mm mags. His BLR is a great little rifle. I believe that he has handloaded both 225 and 250 grain bullets for it. Not much recoil and excellent results on game. The mild velocity and relatively heavy bullets are an excellent combination. Congrats on your success! |

| Bigiron, the load i've taken the deer with is 50gr IMR4064 with 200gr Hornady RN bullets at about 2400 fps. I ran out of time to develope a load with 225 gr nosler partitions. The Hornadys are doing fine but I am a Partition fan especially when shots can't be made in the perfect broadside position. |

| Goat, 225 sierra game kings, 49 gr of win 748, winmag primers, and you'll be right aroung 2450... start 10% lower, of course.
it's the PERFECT north american round, under 200 yards.

| I have used the .358 Win since 1966. It's my favorite woods cartridge and the 99F my favorite rifle for such hunting.
I have always used the 200 gr Silvertip and now the 180 Speer FN so I have no comparison to other bullets in that caliber.
Those bullets are more reliable on deer than cartridges like the 30/06, 7MM Rem Mag and the .308 Win. But they all work. I just like the cartridge that's all. |

| I have been using WW748 and 220g Speer flatpoints out of my .358. It is a dandy deer(and more?) load and cartridge. My .358 is a rebarreled short action M78 Remington.
I don't see why the manufacturers don't offer the .358 Winchester. I think the caliber would sell well in bolt, lever, semiauto, and/or pump carbines with 20" barrels. The .358 will get the job done out to ranges than MOST hunters should be shooting anyway. The big speedburners(RUM SUM DUM whatever) are offered for the long range bunch. The discontinued rifles in .358 always command a premium price and many hunter/shooters end up having their .358 made up by custom gunsmiths. Plateau Hunter |

I did, kind of - E.R. Shaw put a 358 barrel on a Model 700 for me, and it works great. Can't imagine a better round for most N.A. hunting.

| Goat - You have yet to tap the capabilities of this cartridge. Whitetail deer are NO challenge for it. There are LOTS of other game animals you can do just as well with given the opportunity. Hope you get a chance at them.
I'm jealous of your rifle.

| To say the 358 is more reliable than the 30-06 or the 7 Mag. is going a bit far...
It is a great cartridge and I have a lot of respect for it and have used it some...With the advent of the 225 gr. Nosler partition it is even better, but for many years it did not have great bullets and I have blown up many bullets on game animals with it..I recall the old 250 Speers as bombs and most of the bullets were bad for quite awhile on into the 60's..Most were made for the 35 Rem.
With good bullets it is right there with the good old 348 Win., perhaps a tad better and that is no light praise. with the Noslers it should rate with the 35 Whelen easily enough. |

| I have a Shilen barreled model 70 Winchester that I really enjoy. I've taken two deer with it so far. Both dropped at the shot. The reason I haven't used it more is because I have a lot of rifles that I like to use. A regular rifle nut! Anyway, I shoot 225 Nosler ballistic tips and AA2520 (47.5 grains) Fed210M primers in WW brass (opened up 308's) Shoots under an inch.

Jack,
I have shot a lot of whitetails with those bullets than I mentioned in many of the states around here. Most of the shots have been under 200 yards.
I have had quite a few deer get up after being hit with the standard cartridges. I got them all but I don't like that. I have never had a deer get up after being hit with the .358 bullets that I use. They may fall on the spot or stumble a few yards but my heart stops when a animal falls and gets up again. This may be a solution to a non problem to many but not to me.
I have a genuine confidence in this cartridge and it changes the way I hunt. But so do single shot rifles etc. [ 12-16-2002, 22:48: Message edited by: Savage99 ] |

| I have a 358 in a pre 64 FWT M70 that is a pure joy for deer and bear and elk and well most everything. It likes H4895 and the 200gr Hornady. If I draw an elk tag for Colorado the 225 Nosler Partition will be loaded for it. With the inept baggage handlers and the thought of loss this rifle never gets put on a plane. I'm thinking of haveing one built either as a factory 358 or use the 300WSM and neck it up to 358. |

Okay, how about "a better SHORT ACTION round?"

| Being a bit of a 35 fan, I think that the 358 is a great cartridge, mine is in a BLR. If you need more speed from your 35's, then the bigger ones make sense. A 350 Rem Mag on a standard 98 action will outperform the standard 35 Whelen, and will equal the 35 Whelen AI, it's all about case capacity (I've got and/or had all of these). I'm not sure about the 35 WSM and 35 SAUM. Considering the case size, you should be able to get close to 358 Norma Mag velocity, which in a lightweight rifle should really get your attention. For almost all NA hunting the 358 will do fine. - Dan |
