Hey Snyder, Ken makes an excellent point. Confidence in any Hunting Load is very important to me as well.

I suspect the following may only muddy the water for you. Since the B-Tips initially came to market, there have been a good number of re-designs on them. I know of at least 3 re-designs. Each was made to provide a bit deeper penetration than the previous version and less chance of core separation.

That said, my hunting buddies and I killed a lot of Deer with Version 1 and never had a "failure". Those bullets acted exactly like they were designed with rapid expansion and high accuracy. Later Versions work even better.

Here is some good news for you though. As long as you are using a bullet (by any manufacturer) in the 140gr-160gr weight range, "designed for hunting", and place it properly in the forward 1/3 of the Deer, you will kill the Deer.

Some of the deeper penetrating, small expansion bullets may allow the Deer to run slightly farther, but they will die. And the more fragile designs allow for more rapid energy transfer which "may" result in a quicker kill. But each shot is unique to itself.

---

From what I've seen over the years, high Impact Velocities and lighter weight bullets create more bloodshot meat than a slightly heavier, slower moving bullet. Just keep the bullet you choose in the front 1/3 of the Deer and you will do fine.

I would try the 140 grain accubond and or the 140 grain Barnes tripple shock. My 280 is not improved but it puts the acubonds into a prety tight cluster, and my 7mmMauser is fond of both the accubonds and the t shocks.

I have taken more big game with Ballistic tips than with any other bullet, but I will never hunt with one again. I've had two failures that were simply inexcuseable, both bullets simply comming apart on a rib and failing to penetrate the rib cage. One was a 140gr BT shot from a 280 rem and the other was a 150gr BT from a 308 win. Both deer were large bodied muture bucks, one a Mule Deer and the other a Whitetail and both were killed with a second shot as the first one wouldn't have done the job.

schromf: do you have 140 grain partition loads for a 280 or 280 ackley 40 degree shoulder? what about 140 in 7mm ultra mag? i have decent groups with these but nothing like the ballistic tips or the sst's in both calibers. i agree with you on the partitions. i have never had problems with them. the accuracy on these two guns isn't where it needs to be with the 140 partitions. ive still got work to do on these.

I have used NBT's for a good 10yrs,...and have never had a failure. I have shot 125gr pills from a 30-06 over 55gr of N140 and hit a Sika deer in the direct front chest at 7yds. The entrance wound was incredible,..and the base and jacket were found in the far side hide near the rear quarter. I have used the 150gr in the 7mm rem all the way out to 500yds and have never had to track more than maybe 100yds. Unless it's dangerous game,...I'm loading NBT's or some other polymer tipped pill. They are by far the most accurate bullet for game I have used.

For the Ackley try RE-19, 51.5 grs. Use caution as these are all custom chambers so start safely lower. This isn't a hot road load, and you have around 7 grs on the upside, but be smart and safe.

I haven't bit into the Rem short mag Yet!!!! I'll dig and see if I can find you a good starting load though. I am looking for another 7mm and I just haven't made up my mind. I was looking at a custom 284 Win, but I got to thinking that downloading a 7mm Short mag would get me to the same place. I haven't decided on the accuracy side of this yet and don't have enough data points collected to determine if its accurate enough for me. Definately one of my upcoming research projects. I have my hunting rifles sorted out this year, and with the AWB ending in a couple of weeks I am trying to figure out the rules, and layers of restrictions so I can do a legal purchase. And its all lawyer speak and BATF contradicting decisions, and it wasn't supposed to be this confusing or hard but I want to be 100% legal and not sorry, so it taking a lot more time than I figured.

Did you have your chamber cut with a long throat? I use 3.285 and am just on the lands @ 3.305. My Sierra manual calls out 3.285 also I just checked cause our number was so far apart. Is your bolt sticky when you load that long?

THis is one of the big downsides to custom chambers, unless the same smith does two rifles the same stuff varies. If you are loading that much longer I bet you need at least another .5-1 gr powder also. THe good news is your high side it a similar increase in case capacity.
