The right to change our minds is God given. Even the UN Declaration of Human Rights acknowledges that all human beings are free to change their religion, so certainly we can change our minds on lesser things. And make my 338WM lightweight and easy carrying. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

300 Win Mag. Mine's a Tikka ultralight w/ swaro 3x18 scope. I shoot swift A-frames in 180 gr or 200 gr.

Why is that even a question? The definitive and absolutely correct answer is 30.06, and please admins delete any different answers and ban those who posted them. I would choose my Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather that is chambered for 264 WinMag and topped with a 2.5-10x Leupold LPS scope. I absolutely love this rifle. It shoots every bullet that I have tried very well and has enough power to cover the parameter of the OP, with very little recoil to boot. A 127 gr. Barnes LRX launched at close to 3300 fps would probably be my preferred load, but I do like the performance of the 160 gr. Woodleigh Weldcore PP as well.

Definitely a 375 Ruger. While it is not optimum for every situation it is capable of handling every situation.

Of course, if someone already has a 338WM in NorthAmerica they'll cover the bases pretty well. The 338WM and 375Ruger are functional twins like the 270, 308, and 30-06 triplet. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

One gun, would have to be a Drilling. 12 or 16 gauge , 9.3x72R to 7 x 57R with a .22 insert. But what an awful thought only one gun.

416 Tanzan, I have no clue, your probably right, it would mostly depend on what day of the week it was, I can change my mind on caliber in a split second!! Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

What I enjoy about these type of topics is imagining myself hunting Antelope or Sheep and Goats with some of your choices (like 416's and .375's) makes me laugh. Lugging a big bore across the plains for miles or lining up on a Sheep at an odd angle on steep cliffs and broken boulders, not my cup of tea. It's all for fun right? We all know a 30/06 does it all. It did it for me for years and years. What a horrible thought though 1 gun!

If I had to only have one gun, I would pick the 300 Wby. It's the big brother to popular 30-06 and I've taken a fawn antelope all the way up to moose with it.

Get me a sheep license and I'll bring a 416. Mutton on the table. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

For many years it would have been My Pre-64 338 alaskan that my Grandfather gave me. Now I must say it would be My 416 B&M stocked by Ray Atkinson--it fits like a bespoke shotgun and with the CEB Raptor 225 gr @ 2900 fps its a realistic 300-400 yd rifle- I try real hard to not shoot that far anyway. Thanks again Ray--its magic. "The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane." Mark Twain TANSTAAFL www.savannagems.com A unique way to own a piece of Africa. 338 Win Mag 160gn to 300gn will handle anything from rabbits upwards. While not big enough to be considered a true a stopper the 300gn solid bullet will penetrate well enough for any game. Not legal in most countries for DG, but my choice assumes that legality is not a prerequisite. If it was then the 416 Rigby is my second choice.
