Ruger M77 flatbolt in .308 with leupold 4X and 150gr Hornadys. Why, because it reminds me of many fun hunts with friends years ago.

My favorite is my Wby Ultra Lightweight in 240 that is now wearing a VX-R 2-7. Easy to carry, quick to point, very accurate, and pure hell on deer with Partitions, Sciroccos, or TSXs.

Favorite carrying gun during deer season is a flatbolt M77 in .257 Roberts. I rarely get to use it though as my wife and kids also love it.

As of late, my go to deer rifle has been my M77 in 7mm-08 pushing 140 grain Nosler Partitions. My all time favorite and has likely taken more deer then all other rifles combined would be an old Interarms in 243 my dad gave me when I was about 12. I just had it rebarrelled and it really likes the 80 grain Barnes TTSX.

Stainless Ruger Hawkeye in .270Win & topped with a 3-9x40 Leupold.
It's light enough to carry all day & more accurate than I am with either SGK or Pro Hunter.
I feed it 90gr Varminters for non game stuff.

Hunting in areas similar to what you describe, my favorite caliber would be the 358 Winchester. Mine is a Ruger Hawkeye topped with a Leupold VX2 2-7x33. For the longer shots on deer I'd pick a 25-06.

For Deer I would pick one of my .270 WSM's. The load would be a 130 grain North Fork at 3450 fps. Elk would get 160 grain Nosler Partition at 3240 fps. Good shooting.

Ted ----- I quoted the speed for my 140 grain Accubond load at 3240 fps. My actual speed for the 160 grain Partition is 3140 fps. I didn't realize that until your post. Sorry about that, one of my WSM's is 100 fps faster than the others. Goof shooting.

Here in the RSA we do not have white tail's, however I think our Impala falls in the same category. The difference I would say is that shooting distance are generally much shorter. For "pala" I use my .303 Enfield with 180gr Rhinos(core bonded solid shanks) at 2300f/s. The rifle is topped with a 3-9x40 Redfield. We hunt meat "biltong" so meat damage must be at a minimum. If larger species are also on the list I will opt for my 9.3x62,286 gr or 8x57 with 200 grainers.

Happy hunting

For deer, My .257 Roberts. Built on a 1909 Mauser, polymer coated in a synthetic stock for all weather use. Still a favorite even though I tend to pretty wood. Been loading a 100 gr. core-lokt @ 3000 fps. that has always worked perfectly for deer and small hogs.

I have 2. My cooper model 52 338-06 for anything under 4000'. shooting a 210gr Barnes TTSX at 2700fps it kills moose and interior bears very well. For above 4000' it would be my custom 280 AI built on a weatherby ultra light weight action. It pushs 160gr accubond at 2950 and is deadly on dall sheep and caribou.

For deer, where I most hunt them on my lease if i was wanting to be most practical, it would be my R 93 308 Tracker [19 3/4" barrel].

However I really like hunting with my 9,3x74R Chapuis double rifle. I have killed my biggest buck ever with it, at 35 yards.

Lately my most favorite deer rifle has been my Heym Mod 26B O/U in 30/30.

It is short, light, very accurate and a joy to hunt with.

It works great on wild pigs and turkeys, and on coyotes as well.

For years it was my M70 in .300 Win Mag. 6.5-20 Leupold scope and a custom curly maple thumb hole stock. Actually the custom stock was added about ten years into ownership.

Now though I have a .308 I built on a 98 Mauser stocked in a Houge overmolded stock and Nikon 4.5-14 Buckmasters scope with BDC Reticule. Such a nice rifle when the weather is bad.

Then last year I bought a Rem 700 in .270WSM. Just put it in a Hogue stock, installed Timney trigger and topped it with a Nikon Monarch 5-20. Could be a hard choice this year.

However I like to hunt with all the rifles in the safe but these ones stand out.

For the last couple years where I can use a rifle, I have used either my 8x57/16 ga O/U, or my old Ruger 77RS tang safety that I fitted with an UL model stock to. It wears a boring old 2x7 Leupold. The Ruger has been my favorite non combo drilling hunting rifle for a long time.
Bfly

I should have added my old 94 in 32 Special for those really rotten, snowy, rainy days slipping around the mountain laurel. Ranges are measured in feet and it would help to have one leg shorter than the other.

For deer hunting my favorite is a custom Mauser 30-06 with a octagon barrel that I got only a few years ago. Although the rifle is not new neither am I.

Currently it has a Leupold 2.5-8 matte in Conetrol mounts. It's very accurate with all loads and sighted with the Berger 155 VLD Hunting now.

I love rifles in this catagory.
take scotfrom dallases kimber with the same scope, and chamber it in .308 and you have one of my favorits.
I have a little ruger ultra light in the roberts that has VX3 2.5x8 on it and it is real good. Acouple other .308s, pre 64 model 88 and a featherweight are good too.

Not to mention a jc higgins model 50 in .270.

As a lot of my deer hunting (red and roedeer) is done at low light conditions at dusk and dawn, a good scope is mandatory.

Therefore my "go to "deer rifle has this big "stove pipe" on top of it Wink

Otherwise my Ruger M77 MKII in 35 Whelen it is as American as it can be, and a lone bird in my neck of the woods.
I just love this rifle and cartridge, a though and usefull combo Smiler

You don't have my choice listed so here goes:

a 30-06 and a 375 H&H

With proper handloads, an 06 will near match a 7mm mag and a 375 will take care of anything on the planet.

I got 2. 94AE cause I like 30-30's I feel comfortable shooting to atleast 250 maybe a lil bit more depending on how I feel about the shot. Likes 36 grains blc-2 with 150's or 165 grain nosler ballistic tips. 2nd is my Fn 98 in 8mm. There both my favorite guess jus depends on which one I grab.

For tight situations like that I use my Tikka T3 Light in 270WSM. Loaded with 140gr Accubonds it's lights out on deer.

For reaching out on the longer shots I use 140gr Berger hunting VLDs. This rifle currently wears a Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 but will be sporting a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 PA within the next week or two. The Monarch will be sitting atop my Savage 111 sporting it's new Shilen CM 338-06 barrel for rifle elk which starts in a little over a month!

Frank - Are you sure you posted to the correct thread here? I didn't list ANY choices in my question which was the basis for this thread.

Looks to me as if you may have intended to post that response to ar corey's question about a two rifle battery for NA.

Anyway, I sometimes do that wrong thread trick myself, so am not trying to give you a hard time over it. But I'm still curious as to what you would choose in answer to MY inquiry?

AC,
For 20 years my go to deer rifle was a 7x57 FN Mauser with a 3x9 Tasco scope. Five years ago I bought an FN Mauser barreled action in 30-06 I put it in a Bell and Carlson stock and added a Timmeny trigger scoped it with an old 6X Weaver and I fell in love. When I open my safe my FN 7x57 will no longer speak to me. I use Remmington 165 factory ammo in the 06 it is one very deadly combo! Bryan

For about the past decade my go to rifle for Mulies has been my 257 AI and it hasnt dissapointed. But I finished a 7X57 last winter for the expressed purpose of Deer hunitng. Im looking forward to puting it to the test in October. To me, the 6.5mms, 270 calibers and 7mm's just seem to go with deer hunting like peas an carrots.. Hard to go wrong with any of them, but I LOVE the bullet availability you get with a 7mm..

My 6.5-06 with a Shilen SS barrel, Winchester post 64 action and a Bell and Carlson stock topped with a Zeiss 6-24x56 scope.

I use it for everything from Hares to Moose and I have shot about 300 deer at ranges from 6-300 meters with it with impressive results.

Last week I shot 3 Fallow spikes with it at 110, 160 and 170 meters. All hit on the shoulder with a 120 grain Barnes TTSX. 2 went straight down and the last trotted 30 meters before it dropped.

First spike I shot last week at 170 meters and it dropped on the spot. High lung hit. The bullet didn't hit the spine.

A low quality Roe buck I shot last year and the gun.
