Yahoo!!It started life as a Ruger M77 Hawkeye that I had rebarreld with a 24" McGowen CM barrel. I've loaded a bunch of test ammo using 200gr. Hot Cores over serveral powders. Rl-15, IMR 4064, 4320, 4350. All starting loads from the book and working up in one grain increments, none to max yet though. Looking foward to some time on the range this weekend!!

Adam:

I just started working up loads for my Ruger .338 Compact Magnum. It has a 20 inch barrel. I will be shooting 210 TSX bullets and I want to try some 225s as well. As soon the weather permits, I will shoot them across the chronograph. Do you have a chrony? I would very much like to compare notes with you since your 338-06 has a 24 inch barrel.

Dave,
I dont have a chrony, but am considering purchasing one. I would be interested to know velocity, but I have always been an accuracy guy.

Thanks!

Adam

We're using 225 gr. A-Frames and RL19, it doesn't get much sweeter than that. Wink

Cobra, I am going to try some 225 Hornadys with Ramshot Big Game first since I have both handy. I will try Big Game with the 210 TSXs too but the TSXs are much longer so I am afraid the powder may be a bit too compressed. I will give Ramshot TAC a try but with the TSXs Accurate 2520 may be the way to go. We'll see.

+1 tu2

I also tend to prefer the heavy side (225gr) of bullets in the 338-06. If I want to shoot 250gr I go to my 35 Whelen.

My 338-06 really loves 200gr bullets over RL15 but I've recently started playing around with VV N550 and So far I'm liking the results.

I was wondering, do you have a chronograph? I am shooting a .338 Ruger Compact Magnum and would love to see how it compares with the .338-06. I am using Ramshot Big Game and TAC. I would also like to try some AA 2520 with the 210 grain bullets as well as N550.

Same here, I use 200 gr Hornady's and get 2880 fps with RL-15.

If you are concerned about some bullets being too long and result in powder charges being overly compressed give the Speer 225 gr a look.It is very compact for its weight. It slso shoots very well in my 338/06.

I am going to try some 225 Hornady Spire Points first since I have about half a box on my bench. I won't have any trouble with those. It's the homogenous bullets that are a problem and I think I have solved that by switching to a faster powder. Thanks. I will give the 225 Grand Slams a try as well. The have a cannelure for crimping.

Darn hard to improve upon the performance of the 210 gr Partition in the 338-06 IME.

Big Game will definitely work in the .338-06. 62 gr and a 210 TSX will go 2800 fps and sub-MOA in a couple different rifles for me. I can't see any reason it won't work with 225's of any variety as well.

Welcome to "one of" the finest calibers for all game in NA and most of the others as well! My favorite is 210 TTSX/TSX with 51/52 of RL 15 or a good dose of H4350 with the 250 gr bullet.

Enjoy!

Spent a little time on the range this morning. Indications are that it likes RL-15 and IMR 4064. Wish I could have stayed a little longer, but an incident with an idiot told it was time to leave.
A group of LEO's were shooting a variety of guns at the last three stations on the range and couple of us were shooting rifles at the top two. Two empty stations between us. The call went out to cease fire and everybody on both ends put their guns down and acknowledged a cold range. Myself and the other guy shooting rifles started walking down the range to change targets. Luckily I hadnt gone but about 10 feet when one of the LEO's opened up. Wow! Me and the other guy hightailed it back hollering at him as was his shooting buddies. How he didnt see us walking down the range twenty feet away I dont know, but he claimed he didnt hear anyone call for a cold range. The guy who called for the cease fire was right next to him. First time I have ever been involved in something like that at that range. Scared the crap out of me!!

Adam,
I'm anxious to hear how your load progresses. I've got a 338-06 in the works. The action is being trued and blued and I'm waiting on the barrel. I bought some 185 TTSX's for starters-those Barnes bullets penetrate so well I thought I'd go light.

I used the 185 TSX on the the last bull, a decent 5x6, I shot with my 338-06. A quartering away shot at a lasered 280 yards. The bullet entered just inside the shoulder and centered the off shoulder stopping just under the hide. It lost all petals and weighed 122 gr IIRC. I have photos but cannot get to my host from here as it is blocked from access. It looks a lot like a fully utilized Partiton now. I was very surprised to see the bullet so "beat up" given the impact velocity. That said, the bull just dropped at the shot. I will be giving the 225 gr Accubond a go on grizzly in three weeks.

I have had great accuracy and great performance with the 210 TSX in my 300 win. I think it is the equivalent of most other 225's. I wouldn't be afraid to drop down to the 185's if more speed was required. My best load to date however is with the 210's, love em. DW

My fav hunting round. You'll enjoy the manageable recoil & good terminal performance on game. I am quite happy hunting everything w/ the 210grNP @ 2750fps, but other bullets are useful, from the 200gr Speer or Hornady, TTSX, to the 250grNP or sim. Just depends on what you are looking to do with it. Give H4350 a try. I have gone thru a bunch of diff powders & settled on H4350 for all bullet wts in my 338-06.
