Thanks to this forum I am a very happy new .338-06 owner.
Started with a Win Model 70 (Westerner) in 30-06, rifle was never very accurate it would kill a deer a well as it would miss a deer.Never better than 2-2.5 in groups(5 shot) with any bullet over 150grs.
Suggestions here said go with the .338-06 little work tremendous reward, boy were you all right on this.
Benchmark 27" barrel, Hornady 200 gr.Interlock,51.8 gr. Varget(2800fps.book)Norma 338-06 A-Sq. brass,trimmed chamfered with VLD.
Groups were 3/4" consistent @ 100 yds.I do feel this rifle will do better with better bullets and perhaps some RL-15 powder.I am very pleased with my initial results with this rifle.New H-S Precision stock is on order,I am not sure I really need it now.
Thanks to all in getting me staright on this project.

I LOVE my 338-06AI built on a Sako m75 Greywolf rifle with a new Pac-Nor super match grade stainless barrel @ 24". Shoots 225gr AB's and TTSX's with H414 quite nicely. I too use Norma 338-06AS brass and fireform with medium/hot loads.

I had one for many years and will do another one day. R-15 is pretty good in the standard 338-06 but loading density was little short in the improved case. Ditto 4064. I got better velocity and accuracy with R-19. A 200 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip with 64.0 grains was compressed in R-P cases but chrono'd velocities were 2880 from a 25" barrel.

I have a std 338-06, love it as my main NA hunting round, works fine for most AFrican game as well. What's not to like, bigger bullets, bigger holes, shoots as flat as an 06 & in a manageable size rifle that doesn't beat the snot out of you. tu2 Try some H4350, I have played w/ many powders & H4350 gives me extrememy good accuracy & the vel I want w/o pressures.

I shoot my own wildcat 340PDK it is a 338-06AI with the shoulder moved forward and a little less taper. It is right at 79grs of water. My go to is RL15 second choice is IMR 4895. I tried some RL19 but it appeared I would run out of case long before I reach velocities I was seeing with RL15 so I never worked it up to max.

As usual just my $.02

Just got back from the range working up a new load for my 338-06 AI with a new powder - SUPERFORMANCE from Hodgdon. It's speed is roughly IMR4831 and it's very dense. Using 64 grs with a 225 gr. SPEER BT (very little compression needed) and a 26" barrel, I'm getting 2830 fps (4000 ft# KE) from a '06 platform and no pressure signs. This is 338 WM performance. Regards, AIU
