John, can you tell me some of your experiances with the 338 Jarrett, and the 338 win mag, things like velocity, accurracy with 225 and 250 gr bullets, and is the throat angle that Kenny talks about really as top secret as he makes it sound, and is the recoil of a 338 Jarrett signifcantly more than a 338 win mag,and if you could have either of the two which would you choose? Thanks, ackleyfan
I don't have exact figures for the .338 Jarrett in front of me, but is is just slightly faster than the .340 weatherby. I really like the 338 Jarrett. There are no secrets about the throat angle. Other people, including me, use the same thing.
ackleyfan-I use only 210gr partitions and they give me 3100fps.The rifle was a custom 8mm rem mag built on a 700 action, but I had problems getting proper bullets as nosler only makes the 200gr partition now and then, and there are few other choices in premium 8mm bullets. In order to broaden my bullet selection I had a reamer built and installed a new barrel. It is just the 8mm rem mag case necked up to .338".

The .338 Jarrett is an improved case. The recoil is manageable, but not very pleasant. I usually encourage people to use muzzle brakes on them, at least for bench work. One really nice thing about the .338 Jarrett is that you can shoot .340 Weatherby ammo out of it in a pinch. I was impressed with the very first one that we built down at Jarrett's and have been impressed with all of them that I've shot.
Have you seen the 210 338 at 3100 fps to be anymore effective than 175 gr at 3100 from 7mm STW? Do Elk size animals die any quicker? I know the recoil is going be greater, is it big leap in recoil?
Gringo-Recoil is very stiff, even more than my 300ultramags with 180gr bullets.Penetration is very good as I have put one of these bullets from end to end on a grizzly.I can't tell you anything about a 175gr bullet out of a 7mm of any kind because I do not and never will use such a heavy 7mm bullet.I use 140gr ballistic tips at 3500fps out of my 7mmstw's for hunting deer, sheep and pronghorn.I used to use the 140gr partition to hunt elk and moose and it did work very well.I now use the 300 ultramag and 180gr bullets at 3375fps for moose and elk and I believe it kills quicker than either the 7mm or 338.The 338 seems better than the 7mm but not as good as the 300ultramag.I now use the 338x8mmremmag as my bear gun as it hits so hard yet penetrates so well.

Thanks, What you said concerning the STW reminded me of what my gunsmith told me one day. An STW is great with a 140 gr bullet, but for any other wieght there are better options. My STW is a rechambered 7 mag that was supposed to be a project rifle, but the project keeps being put on hold. It shoots 140 Noslers great, but I will give the 140 gr XLC a try also. I might get lucky and get 140 gr velocity with 175 partition penetration.
Gringo-I find that the 140gr partitions have all the penetration I require.I have taken several elk and moose with this bullet and all but one bullet exited. That one bullet was a raking shot that penetrated a lot of elk before stopping against the hide.I use the 7mmstw for its flat trajectory and using 175 gr bullets sacrifices this trajectory with no real advantages considering the 140 partition penetrates so well.If I feel that I need more bullet weight I use a bigger caliber.I feel this way about all 7mm's not just the stw.
