Marks on the bolt of a new rifle. Is this normal?

Just picked up a brand new Remington 700.

Looking at the bolt of the rifle, which I still haven't inserted into the rifle at all, I saw these wear marks in the finish on the lugs, both sides.

Have you seen this on a brand new rifle before?

Does it indicate that the rifle is used or that the bolt comes from a used rifle?

Thank you in advance.

At a minimum I would think that Remington must check each rifle for adequate lug mating and for head space...

Do you mean that those marks are consistent with factory fitting? I am still new so I don't know how many bolt cycles would remove the finish from areas on the lugs like that you see in the photos. Thank you.

All rifles are test fired and proofed prior to sale. I do not believe you got a "used" rifle......

If tolerances are on the minimum side, the assembly process, testing the trigger, and test firing can easily remove that much blueing or coating from the bolt.

Lock and load you have a good new rifle. I'd be more concerned if the bolt showed no signs of having been inserted and worked in the action.

Some would say you should take a look at the trigger on that rifle rather than the bolt lugs... Wink

Yes indeed. I looked at the bolt release button and it had the punch mark which Remington says is an evidence that the trigger was repaired Smiler Here is the information page for those who need it

The only thing I would comment on is that I too think its normal. apply a small amount of grease on the rail and back side of the lugs.

It's normal. I have three of em and two have bluing like yours and both show marks. All three are unfired.

Incidently, I installed a replacement spring sold by "Ernie the Gunsmith" online and all three of my Xmark pro triggers easily rival my Timney. They are like a glass rod breaking. A worthwhile upgrade for $6.95 plus shipping.

Can you please recommend a quality gun grease for the lugs? I don't want to use generic greases and would rather buy the best gun grease.

I USE Montana x-TREME. Just about any high pressure greases.

Shooters Choice or the green synthetic goop from an auto parts store. Anything with a high Timken rating if you really want to overthink it.
