My rifles won't be complete by elk season so I am borrowing my brothers 270AI. We also wont have time to get custom dies, and work up loads, so factory ammo it shall be. I have a cow tag, and the area we hunt often provides longer shots (under 200 is extremely rare) the elk I have shot averaged just over 300 yards. I have never kept up on this caliber so I'm not sure whose ammo performs best.

A lot of elk have been successfully taken with corelokts and power points.....However....I'd look for a 150 premium bullet.....A-Frame, Partition, TBBC, or even Barnes TSX bullets. Federal and Remington both make some real good premium ammo.....but again....good old 150 grain corelokts will do the job!

There shouldn't be any issues shooting factory 270 Win ammo in the AI chamber. Not sure about accuracy.
Federal Premium loads a 150 partition. You can also go to the Nosler's Proshop website and get some of their factory ammo on sale, which will be with the Nosler brass. That is a bonus, IMO.
Black Hills loads the Barnes bullets if I recall.
Any of those would work. The Remington ammo would be fine as well. I'd go with the corelokt ultra myself.

Midway has 140gr TBBC and Hi_energy 140 TBBC on sale, might be giving these a try. I'm a firm believer in premium bullets when elk hunting, I've seen too many cheap bullets not get the job done right the first time. The country I hunt is NOT hospitable to chasing down elk, I want it dropped ASAP. I might try the Winchester XP3 as well. Times like these I sure do miss the Fail Safe Thankfully I have 300 165gr .308's for my next WSM

I would order a couple of boxes of custom Ammo from one of the custom guys, I am at a loss as to who I used once before, but there are a couple of really high quality outfits out there, that would build you ammo on the 270 AI case, and you could pick which ever bullet you like, I'd go an A-frame, but there are plenty of recommendations around here if your looking.
Good Luck!!

Remington "Express" ammo in 150 grain is a round nosed bullet, not what you want fo over 300 yards. Winchester's Power Point is a pointed bullet but if it were up to me and factory loads were it then I would go with Federals 150 grain Partition loading.
Leftists are intellectually vacant, but there is no greater pleasure than tormenting the irrational.
I've used the 130gr Barnes X,XLC and TSX on elk since the early 1990's. It's the only bullet I use anymore for big game. Much better penetration than the Partition's, but, you can never go wrong with a Partition.

I bought some of these for just that purpose. Super-premium bullets like the TBBC have given new life to the ol' 270. It was good for elk before, now it's great!
