Hi everyone, what reloading dies would your recommend to reload the 35 Whelen for a new Remington 750 semiautomatic rifle? Any thoughts on powder, (RL15?), bullets? Jimmyp

Welcometo AR.

I use Redding, RCBS, and Lee dies and of them I like the Reddings best, but the Lee's are worth every penny. And really I can't say there's anything wrong with any of them. The Reddings seem to be high quality and consistant. The Lee's are cheap and work.

I purchased all Redding and RCBS. The Lee's were given to me.

Bullet choice varies by what your shooting with them. One of my favorite all around is the Hornady Interlock. I also use quite a few Sierra Gamekings and particularly thier HPBT. Lots will depend on your rifle.

I don't have a Whelen so I'm of little use for load recomendations. There are others around that will help out I'm sure. Nate

P.S. I am going to try the Hornady dies if I can find an excuse.

I used to poo poo Lee dies until a friend talked me into a set and they just worked fine. So...the price is right and they work....what else is there.

That said I probably have thirty sets of RCBS dies and no complaints there as well.

I'd use H-4895 in the Whelen and stuff it with the Hornady Interlock 250 grain bullet. It's a lot of whack to use on a deer.

jimmy,
I use the Hornady New Dimension dies which I think are pretty good. For your semi-auto, I would also recommend Lee Factory crimp die.

For powders, there are many, Reloader 15 being my favorite, but IMR 4064, Varget, IMR 4350 are all quite good.

Not sure what you want to hunt, but I think 225 gr Nosler Partition or Barnes TSX would do just about anything you need it to. The only time you would need a 250 gr or heavier bullet IMO is if tackling big bears up close.

BigBullet, can you use a Lee .35 Remington factory crimp die for the 35 Whelen?

I used a set of Lee dies to reload for a mate's 35Whelen. The did just fine and the crimp applied was effective in holding a Woodleigh 310gr in place.
Cheers...

Jimmy,

The factory crimp die is by caliber, so a 35 caliber factory crimp die is what you are looking for.

In most rifles the standard crimp that the bullet seating die applies is fine, especially for bolt action rifles where you can put a little more umph into chambering a round, in a semi it better go in smoothly and without any hangups or you now have a single shot. The Lee Factory crimp will give a smooth crimp without the tendency for the nesk to bulge.

i've got lee rgb's and they're great. all die mfgrs should be required to have an expander like lee. that long taper, i took 100 30-06 cases up to 35 whelen with zero scrap once i figured out how much lube the neck needed.

a buddy of mine had said once that he suspected lee dies of resizing a little closer to minimum dimensions than some and for that reason i had lee rgb's for a browning grade III bar 300winmag. it cycled them just fine. contrary to that, a bar in 30-06 i had long ago would lock up on ammo put up in rcbs -06 standard dies. maybe coincidence as 2 samples aren't enough for a determination.
