If you look up "inept" in the dictionary you will see my picture. I have no mechanical common sense what so ever. But I'll never get any if I run to the gunsmith for every little thing. I want to install a pre-fit limbsaver recoil pad on my synthetic, stainless Sako 7mm Rem Mag. I think most American made rifles use phillips head screws to attach the standard pad, but heard that the Sako might need a hex wrench. I dont want to round out an unseen hex screw with the wrong tool. Anyone know for sure? And while we're at it, the hole on the stock side of the new pad is huge. I cant for the life of me imagine that there is anything for the head of the screw to "bite" on. I'm quite sure I have the correct pad. Thanks for any help

Since the old pad is scrap....you're done with it and you won't save it or reuse it you can cut it away until you see the old screws....then go from there.

I actually grind them off on a 12" diameter 40 grit disc sander and epoxy on new ones.....I really hate the screws and so I don't use them at all.

Thanks for the common sense reply. As they say, common sense is distinctly uncommon.

Wallace, if you're worried about stripping out a hex hed screw with a philips screw driver, try out the hex first. As staed, the old pad is garbage anyways, so do a bit of trimming with a knife, so you can shine a flashlight in to see what it really is. (mine had straight slot screws).

I recently changed the recoil pad on my Sako rifle and the screws were Phillips head screws, not hex.

Should be easy. Unscrew the old and screw in the new. Should be no problem.
