All I can say is I love mine. I just had a new barrel made up for a slightly older Sako in 30-06. It pitches 250 or 286 grain North Forks in a satisfactoy manner.

Next up should be a 9.3 x 62 barrel at 20" so Cewe can take me on a driven moose hunt.

Good to see you on the boards Curt!

Lawndart, other than a new barrel, was there any other work needed to make it work? Lou

I think 9,3x66 is a pure marketing caliber. While the Brenneke-company with its 9,3x64 never penetrated the US market properly, Sako used the chance and developed very similar cartridge. Ballistics has showen that the new cartridge stands a bit behind the old Brenneke. So particulary for me there is no reason to ponder.

I am new to the 9,3 in a bolt action as I just bought my frst 9,3x62. But after shooting it I am hooked. Great package in a small case.
Why hasnt the 9,3x64 caught on in the states? 375 performance in a standard action with no belt means at least one more down in the magazine in a trim package.
I hope the 9,3x66 catches on as it has great potential as well.

Hi Dr. Lou,

No other changes whatsoever.

The cartridge does get 2,559 fps muzzle velocity with 286 grain Nosler Partitions. You could beat that with North Forks, especially if you Hexagonal Boron Nitride the bullets by impact plating. Then you need a strong factory style crimp (and an extra cannelure if necessary).

Hi Snowwolfe, The 9.3x62 is basically a much more effective 35 Whelen. Without a big recoil or weight penalty you can use those high sectional density .366 bullets that make big, leaky holes going in and out; all without ripping your arm off.

The 9.3 x 64 Brenneke is the equal of a 375 H&H Belted Magnum in a two pound lighter rifle. Mine is just awaiting the bottom metal and the high tech specialties stock. So, I will have the moral equivalent of a 375 H&H in a 7.7# gun.

It should catch on. You can get one made out of any CRF Winchester, Model 98, or any number of push feeds very reasonably. I have a rear peep sight and a fiber optic front sight for hunting close in the thick stuff, and QD Talley rings for a 1.5 x 5 by 20 mm for open country. Add Cerakote and a Kevlar stock (with a leather covered Sorbothane kick pad), and you can do it all from sport hunting to culling. Stick a Ching sling (So named after Eric Ching, its inventor, who tragically died a few years ago of a brain tumor at a young age.) on it and you can walk softly with your big stick.

CZ, What makes this cartridge work are the double based powders that Vihtavourhi came out with a decade or so ago. VV N550 is the fuel of choice for all of the Sako factory cartridges. Also, modern day safety tolerances being what they are, the 9.3x66/370 Sako Magnum will work with a standard 30-06 bolt head and a standard 30-06 magazine box.

All I can say is that mine works like an eighteen year old bebutante in a little black party dress that is a size too small. Mine is also exceptionally accurate. Much credit goes to the Krieger barrel and modern bullets, but psychologically you know that you can hit anything, and hit it with authority from 350 meters on in.

This cartridge shines in a 24" - 25" barrel. The 9.3x62, as stated above, is really at home in a 20" - 22" barrel with quick sights for running animal work.

YMMV.

Lawndart, I sure like your writing style. What can be said about the ballistics of the 9.3x64 and the 9.3x66, can also be said about the wildcat 9.3x338. IMO they are as close as any three cartridges can get in performance.

Thank you Kabluey Sir,

I read a poorly written article a few years back about an 8mm Rem Mag necked up slightly to .366. I was also referred to an article about what you speak of; a 338 Win Mag necked up slightly to .366"

I have several boxes of cases, and a chamber print for the 9.3x70, a necked down 404J. Harald Wolf built a 9.3x70 and wrote it up in Hatari Times. It was Herman Goring's favorite cartridge. From dik-dik to elephant, that cartridge should do it all, and shoot plenty flat in the process. It would be one of the very few instances that would justify a variable power rifle scope. It can also be made on a Mauser 1898 action, maybe a 1938 Czech.

It needs about a 25" barrel. That is no hardship. It is gaining in popularity among European hunters who travel.

That 9.3x70 seems interesting. That could be the right cartridge for the CZ 550 safari action. As I remember, the 404 case head is a little bigger than the H&H.

yes,

A CIP specification 9,3x66mm reamer should nicely clean up a 9,3x62mm chamber; basically a longer case body with same length neck equaling a longer overall case length.

LD: I was never really gone Wink And you´re welcome on that moose hunt anyday.

The 9.3x64 is optimal for thinskinned DG, my leopard died nicely with one shot even if it went a little high. The 320gr Woodleigh is perfect for this caliber.
