I just got a chance to see the oddest Mauser model b I've ever seen. Yes, in .303 savage! Made in 1926 according to the stamping, and marked 7.7x51R. It was not a slant mag box, but work had been done to it and the rails/follower. It would feed with the 3 rounds I cycled through it just fine. You just never know what you'll find huh!

I didnt get a photo, I dont have a cell phone and no camera with me. It was fairly standard looking model B, nothing noteworthy but the caliber. The fellow who previously owned it wanted to re-barrel because he didnt know what it shot. Bought from him for $400.

If its an Original Oberndorf Model B , Jon Speed, who wrote the Mauser book would probally be intrested in the details. He left his email in the latest book requesting any info on Original Oberndorf Sporting Rifles. This does sound like an odd ball and certaainly a collectors item. Good find and Good Luck Bob

Now all you have to do is find ammo. Slug your bore because a proper .303 Savage should have a .308" groove diameter. Paul B.

It was made for swaging a bullet in the barrel from 310 down to 308 (witk thin jacket).

the original savages were made with 308 bbl's and the ammo was made with 311 bullets. the 303 was designed to beat the 30-30 by some fps,and that was how they done it.

I've had two Savage rifles chambered to the .303 Savage, one an origianal very low numbered 1895, not the M99 and it had a .308" bore. There's no way you can ever make me believe that they used .310" or .311" bullets in those rifles. I also feel Winchester made a serious error in judgement for not loading the 30-30 with those 190 gr. Silvertips they used for the .303 Sav. If you read gun writer Sam Fadala's boo on the 30-30, he says that he buys .303 Sav. ammo and pulls the bullets to load in his 30-30. He feels they're better killers on gane and I'm inclined to agree. I use a 190 gr. cast bullet (RCBS #30-180-FN that makes a 190 gr. bullet in my alloy) that flat smacks deer down with serious thump.
