..... Truley working a rifle is a concept lost on some people .....Here is a target I shot yesterday in the wind .300 yards
I finished sighting a new rifle in , packed the target out to the 300 yard marker walked back and shot 6 rounds from the bench . I have cleaned the rifle a total of 1 time , before I ever shot it and have run about 40 rounds thru it so far ..
At this point I wouldn,t hesitate shooting anything fox size and up @ 300 yards if I could get a good rest . . I need to check @ 100 yrds again and possibly make a 2 click right adjustment . Scope is a 1.5-6 Burris .. If it is my technique ,then I will need to work on it a little ..... However I think it is wrong to use some little girls gun for shooting big game at more than a hundred yards or so .... I shoot the 375 about as well as I do the 223

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Gumboot,
It looks like that new Ruger working rifle walked all over that target, then you drew circles and stuff. Big Grin

I'm glad to see that you have been out there enjoying yourself. A guy needs to shoot those big bores often to avoid developing a flinch. Wink

5 rounds sighting in a new rifle . 6 rounds shooting at the target moved to 300 yards away ....In a gusty 15-20 mph wind Called the flyer to the left so that puts all the other 5 in a black tail deers kill zone .....@ 300 yards .....With a factory rifle and factory ammo ............A little more practice and I can prolly shrink the group to 2 1/2 " or so ..........Like Idaho said about 3 or 4 trips to the range with most rifles will give you good shooting at 300 yards ....

The problem with 300yd shots is that the wind can really start to open things up. A 1 MOA wind can still let you shoot a 1" group at 100yds but makes a 3" group at 300. Or like in this group you can flinch one shot right out of the group Smiler, I fired 2 shots and saw in the spotter they were in 1 hole and flat out flubbed the 3rd shot off the paper. I cooled back down and put the 4th shot back into the group:

Usually late in the evening the wind will finaly die down at our range and you might get a few decent groups at longer range. This is with a lightweight 270 Winchester with a 20" barrel:

Notice of course that I again flubbed the 3rd shot a bit, but not quite as bad as the first target! Smiler

This was the first group at 300 I shot with this rifle:

This was an AR-15 with match Iron sites. The wind caught the 5th shot, it's hard to read mirage through Irons Smiler.

I guess people can go ahead and poke fun at me for the extra shots the wind caught etc.. You asked for some 300yd group pics and these were the ones I had handy. I guess the point I'd make is that lots of different rifles are capable of making good groups at 300yds, but don't be discouraged at first if you flinch a few shots here and there or the wind blows your 1" group into a 4" one. It's going to happen more often than not at first. But keep at it and you might just be surprised at how well you can shoot at longer distances when you work at it. It's probably better (as in less discouraging) to shoot at targets the size of an animals kill zone where hits are what count more than the distance between your bullet holes. Steel targets that fall over are the most fun because of the instant gratification (yes I'm a silhouette shooter Smiler ).

Good luck! Practice at it and you'll do it!.................................DJ

Hey dj

I've been looking for a good excuse for this target!! Big Grin

This is a 26" Douglas barrel 6.5 rem mag and it shoots pretty good

300 yards takes practice, a good rifle and a good load. The more you shoot at the longer distances the easier it gets.

Then you have to go through the whole process again for 400 yards

which makes shooting at 300 yards seem a lot easier.
