Question for anyone that uses Quickload or Accuload.... A little background first: (not that it really matters!) I have a buddy's 7mm Rem Mag (Browning A-bolt Stainless Stalker) and am doing some reloading for him. I also have his 270 WSM in the same make of rifle. The 7mm has a 26" barrel, the 270 has a 23" barrel and about a 1/2" shorter action. He'd like to make them the same length to fit the same pack scabbard interchangeably. But before going ahead and having 3 1/2" chopped off his barrel, thought I'd try to figure out what he'd loose in terms of velocity from his pet load. Right now he is getting 2930fps with 175grain bullets from his 26" barrel. What should he expect from a 22 1/2" barrel? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Canuck

2820 to 2830fps. | |||

Loadtech (accuload) calls the new velocity as 2830-2850 depending on powder. The slower the powder the more the difference. He might be able to recover a good portion of the loss and reduce muzzle blast by using a faster powder. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

With something like Accurate 2460 or reloader 22 he might get as high as 2880 fps. With Hodgdon Bench Mark he may get as high as 2925fps. This was determined at 58000psi. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..

What you should expect is a total change in barrel timing. After trimming it back you’ll need to work up a new load for it. It may shoot better, the same (with less velocity), or it may not shoot worth a damn again. It sounds like your friend is being too cheap by 2. Buy a second scabbard. It’s his rifle; he can do what he wants. Go for it.

Thanks for the help guys! Much appreciated. I think the scabbard is mainly an excuse...he has always disliked the 26" tube. Always in the way on a horse, etc. Cheers, Canuck

I know -day late, dollar short. Instead of destroying a perfectly good 26" tube why doesn't your buddy get a featherweight 270, or something like it? The 160 grain .277" partition is potent in its own right. This is one of those rare situations where I believe the old lever gun reigns supreme. Those old short range thumpers will never fade away
