| CK, First of all you have all the rifle you need to hunting anything short of stuff that's likely to eat or stomp you, black bears included. I'm a pretty serious rifle nut so it's hard for me to say this but what you should buy next isn't another rifle.
The next thing you should save for is a good scope for your 270WSM. Something like a Leupold VX-III would be a good choice. Unfortunately I think that all too soon you're going to find out the limitations of Simmons optics once you start using a better scope like a Leupold.
The 2nd thing that you should invest in next is a set of reloading equipment. Being able to create different loads for different purposes will teach you a lot about guns and shooting. First try to make yourself a deer load that shoots well and then work up a good Black bear load. Maybe you can work up a good lower-recoil practice load. I think that you'll have a lot of fun doing it too. Learning the ballistics of each load you create will make you a better shooter.
Believe me I'm probably the last person in the world that should be telling anyone that they shouldn't buy more rifles but I remember being 14 and getting into shooting. I think you'll have more fun with more ammo to shoot and a better scope to see through than you would with another rifle with a mediocre scope and less to shoot...........DJ |

| CK, The 243 is a good bit more powerful. The rifle prices would probably be about the same. The 223 will be far cheaper to shoot. Look up surplus ammo prices at www.cheaperthandirt.com and www.sportsmansguide.com and others and you'll see what I mean. Even your local walmart is likely to have white-box Winchester where 50rds of 223 costs about the same as 20rds of 243.......DJ |

| ok i agree with djpaintles what you need is the good leuold scope first and reloading equipment but either after that or instead it all depends on you don't over look the 308 win it can go the distance and takes many big game i've taken bear with it without worrying at all but all said still think about the better scope and reloading before just buying a new rifle plz there is alot of potentail with 270wsm |

| Id vote for the 223, you already have something with more power so you dont need the 243 over the 223 for that reason, and volume shooting just calls for the 223. Then get the 30-06 after that. It may be easy to call it boring, but everyone has one, and we all cant be boring - can we??, no really, are we all boring, dont lie. Then you move into the 35 wheelen, and onto a 45/70, and then you fill in the gaps!!! Save the reloading for a little later, its a hobby for those of us who need a quiet retreat, at your age you still need to kick it up a little. |

| I also would recommend adding a .223 to the .270wsm you already own. If you aren't into handloading, then it makes even more sense to opt for a .223. I checked DJ's link, and cheaperthandirt has the Federal American Eagle .223 ammo with 50 gr Hollow Point bullets for less than $6 for a box of 20. Hopefully it will be more accurate than the mil surp or winchester USA 55 gr fmj stuff, as well as being more effective on target. The .223 would provide a lot of shooting for the $. AS for rifles, some folks like the N.E.F. Handi-Rifle, but if it were me, I would only consider the Howa 1500 Varmint or the Savage varmint for a heavy barrel option. Walmart should be able to order any of the Howas for you. Just go to walmart.com, click show all departments, click on hunting, then rifles, bolt action, and take a look. Good luck, but I still agree that your first priority would be to upgrade the scope on the .270WSM, and then invest in some handloading hardware and components. Chances are your .270wsm could handle all your shooting chores and by using it for everything, you could become quite skilled with it. There is an old saying: "Beware the one rifle hunter, he probably knows how to use it". |

| Im in love with savage rifles, they have a package (same as the one i have now) wood stock blued barrel leather sling and simmons cheapo scope in 25-06. But i also like a rifle excactly the same as mine but in 7mmWSM (i want to own all the WSM and WSSM calibers). Could anyone recomend a good rifle chambered in a WSSM caliber other than a savage? for around $500? i could get a savage varmit rifle at that price in any WSM and WSSM calibers. |
