| The curve in the butt was probably sanded flat when the pad was installed. Reinstalling an original butt plate would require another curve, which will shorten the stock further. I would just replace the current recoil pad with a shorter buttpad.

yup....good assessment quote: I was just wondering if there is any chance I could find an original buttplate for the thing. Anyone know if parts are available? Posting this on the gunsmithing forum might give you a better chance of a reply as many people with insight as to where to get things post there

Ditto. Rather than try to sand a perfect curve in the stock, so the factory butt plate would fit nicely, which isn't real easy, I'd get one of the good looking 1/2" pads and install it. Brownell's has them.

| Thanks for the input. I guess I hadn't noticed before in the pics of unaltered rifles that they had a curve. I just assumed they would be flat. I can find a thin plastic or rubber buttplate to put on it without too much effort. It's not as though the rifle hasn't been altered in other ways and I wanted to return it to the original state. I just thought I'd go with an original buttplate if one happened to be available. |

| An original in decent shape would be pretty hard to find. The plastic had a tendency to shrink and sometimes crack around the screws. They were nothing special anyway, no fancy logos, etc. Find a plain flat plactic take-off butt plate at a gun show or shop w/o trademarks.

Funny the plastic shrinking, but I have a new unfired 22H and the wood is proud all around the butt plate. I'll have to remedy that one day. The "unfired" part that is, lol. Aut vincere aut mori |

| Got your PM, Mike, I probably can give you one in decent shape if you PM me your address. I will do this after Christmas, as I have to dig through this old cold storage room and my wife will you know if I mess up her house at this time of year.
An unfired 22H, especially a late roundbolt is to me a more desireable gun than a Purdey, is yours a 7x57 ot 8x57? |
