Which is your preference for whitetails under 400yds. ?

It's unlikely that you, or the deer, would ever know the difference. If you like short actions, get the '08. If you are not a handloader, get the 270.

olarmy nailed it - what one will do, the other will do equally well.

One of my favorite deer bullets in 7mm caliber is the TTSX 120 grain. It makes the 7-08 and 7 X 57 quite spectacular in the trajectory and energy delivery department. It makes the 7-08 Remington stand toe to toe with the larger cased .270 Winchester.

It makes no difference. I shoot a 7mm-08 because I like the short action. Get which ever one you "like" best.

Either will do just fine, your whitetails being the same size as our fallow does.

If you are shooting at long distances then the 270 might just edge it.

Just go with a 270-08.

JMO, but if you do it right on the first shot, action type, caliber, etc., amount to nothing. Drop your game with a well placed shot the first time! (as in, might as well hunt with a single shot)

7-08 is great caliber, but for me, I went with the 308 on my build.

Here in Montana we have a gormet ice cream maker, Wilcoxson's, think Ben and Jerkoff's without the liberal BS. They make two types or flavors of vanilla ice cream, French Vanilla and Old Fashioned Vanilla. The locals all have their favorites and arguements as to which one is "best". The point is they both sell well, they are both vanilla ice cream, the difference is in the preception of the ice cream consumer.

Find a rifle in either caliber you like, the deer will not know the difference.

In equally accurate rifles the .270 will give you a bit of an edge for targets more than 250 yards distant due to its slightly higher velocity and a bit flatter trajectory. Is the advantage enough to insist on a .270 over a 7mm-08? No, of course not.

My suggestion, if cartridge is really a factor in your decision, check the ballistic tables, and see what they'll do @400 yds. A 270 Winchester with a 130 grain bullet can easily reach 3100fps, if you hand load. I have no experience with the 7mm-08, other than I have shot a few targets with a friends, but I am sure one of the guys here can give you a load to compare with.

Maybe it doesn't matter...but every little out of the way shop seems to have 270 ammo....but I've run across a few that didn't have 7-08. but maybe that's just my experience.

If I were doing the picking, it would be the .270, better yet the .270 WSM. Good shooting.

you can kill stuff with either one. so get the one you like most as shoot stuff with it

When I leave the house to go on a hunting trip, I have enough ammo for my rifle to open up my own gun shop.
In 50 years of flying, I've lost my bag exactly one time -- knock on wood-- and it came in on the next flight. It was not a hunting trip. Still, when I fly to hunt, I still divide my ammo into two different suitcases.

The deer will nto be able to tell teh difference wand neither will you.

Of couse you should drive a Dodge to the hunt.

Why not go retro and shoot a 7x57?

I go along with Ray. Who ever contrived the notion, that a 2" case, can do the same as a 2.5" case. Makes no sense to me, and never has. Yea, for the 270,280/7X64, 30-06 and 35 Whelen.
I like the short cases also, but they still lack the powder capacity to drive the bullet as fast, if that is what your looking for.

Hmmm, not to sure about whitetails, we don't have any of them around here... but my youngest daughter did use her 7-08 to take 4 elk and 3 mulies during her high school years. We've been using .270's here in western Colorado to take elk since it was invented and it is still killing them every year... just don't tell the elk, they might just stop falling over dead if they knew you can't kill an elk with a .270

Both w/ good bullets, flip a coin. I would go 7-08 just becasue I don;t like the 270. The 280 woul dbe even better & IS my choice for deer & antelope.

It is an article by Ross Seyfried, and excellent reading. Now I'm no expert, but after 30+ years guiding elk hunters in Colorado, my experience with 7-08-.270-7mm mag. Is that the elk don't know the difference when a bullet is properly placed. The last two I shot weren't impressed that they had been shot with a .358 STA either. They acted as though they had been shot with a lowly .270... and died pretty quick anyway. I have noticed that tends to happen when you shoot one in the boiler room with just about anything. Okay, I'll admit it, this winter I sold the .358 and replaced it with a (gasp!) .270! Why? I already know I can kill anything around here with it quite handily and I don't have to take a beating from the rifle. This particular rifle was shooting 2.5 to 3.5 inch groups at 550 yards last night so I'll also use it to shoot ground hogs. Could this be the perfect 1-gun-does-all caliber?!
