I found a Herters U9 built on a BSA Action and looks like Hart Barrel in 300 mag Bluing and wood excellent.

Any idea what it's worth?

I've never been able to assume what barrel was used and I'd suggest that the barrel maker must be assumed to be generic!

It really depends what you're willing to pay....how much you like it....IMO I'd not want to sink more than $300 in it.

Could be wrong but something tells me they were supposed to wear Douglas bbls.

My understanding was that the U9s had a barreladded to the action and that Herters was getting those from Hart back then. This one has a barrel that is different work than the action, and the barrel wears the markings U9 and England.

I Live in Minnesota, and have been to the Waseca Herters store many times. It was better than sex going there and I was younger then!

From there 1972 catalog the U9 with a Douglas Barrel was a $20.00 upgrade from the standard Herters Model Perfect barrel. These generic barrels were sold at the everyday price of $14.49.

If you had purchased a barreled action or a complete U9 rifle from Herters, I suspect that it would have worn whatever barrel came from the BSA factory (Birmingham Small Arms, England).

Coincidentally, I saw a rifle with a BSA action today at a gunshow with a tag labeling it "English made Sako". I don't think the seller was trying to fool anybody, he just really didn't know any better. Somebody told him that those "actions with dovetailed receivers must be Sakos, cause, you know, them Sakos came that away".

I just went and looked in my old Herters books. Don't know why that didn't occur to me. It's a U9 Super Presentation Grade and it's a Douglas Barrel, not Hart. Even when it was new though it was only $179, so I shouldn't pay any more than that for it now right??? In fact it must have depreciated some by now wouldn't you think.

Seriously though, I am looking for a real world value for it today. The rifling is nice and sharp, the gun has seen very little use. I doubt it has had three boxes of ammo through it. It definitely ia a Herters finished product and not a barreled action dropped into a stock. The stock is an exact match to the catalogs.

From the looks of the scope on it (an old Bushnell) the rifle has delivered a nasty scope bite to a previous owner. Maybe I could track him down with the DNA and see what he could tell me about the gun.
