My son wanted a 270 Winchester for hunting whitetails in North Carolia. I have given him a Kimber 8400 for Christmas. I have been very happy with Sciroccos in .300Win Mag, .308Win, and .243Win. I have bought a box of 130 grain Scirocco II. My first loadings will be 60.grains of H4831SC with a CCI BR-2 with a 3.340 OAL. This should be pushing this bullet about 3200fps. Would like to hear about others trials and tribulations with the 130 Scirocco in the 270 Win.

Thanks
Longshot

I don't have any experience with the Scirocco bullet, but there's a couple things about your post that make me curious.

First - what makes you think you'll get 3200 fps with 60 gr. H4831SC? Hodgdon lists less than 3100 with that load and 130 gr. bullets.

Second - That is a maximum load of H4831, according to Hodgdon. I'm wondering why you would want to start there.

FWIW, I get 3150 with a Hornady 130 gr. over 60 gr. RL-22, Win case, CCI-200 primer, 24" barrel. I couldn't tell you the OAL, but I had to seat my bullets out a little. I worked up to this load, checking for pressure signs all the way. It's also quite accurate.

Longshot,

I’ve gotten 3065 fps with 59.5 grns. H4831, 130 Nosler Solid Bases, .270Win., 22†bbl. The Scirocco II’s are defiantly killing machines, but they can be sensitive to throat depth and the copper jackets may be a bit “sticky†in a new factory barrel. You may get 3200 fps with them but it will depend on the chamber & probably a good barrel break-in. I’m currently working on a .260 AAR project specifically to use the 130 grn, .264 Scirocco.

Where are you in Youngsville? I lived there about 2 years ago, & I hope to be moving back soon after the first of the year.

Merry Christmas,
Dave

The 270 and 130 grain bullets are a classic combination for deer.

However, I've not had good success with scirocco bullets. I hope you get better accuracy than I did.

Sierra game king 150s work well for me.

I have to agree with "duikerman" about the 150gr gamekings. Great bullets.

I have actually had good luck accuracy wise with 130 Sciroccos in a couple of different .270s, but took no game with them. One .270 would not digest 60 gr. of H-4831, but in another it was fine. Max load in the Swift manual is 60.5 gr H-4831 with Fed brass and Fed 210 primers for 3119 fps. However, I have not had good luck with 180 Sciroccos in 2 different .300 WSMs and 1 .30-06 or 150 Sciroccos in a .280 (all of which were not particularly finicky about which bullets they shot accurately), so some guns may not shoot them well or maybe I had a run of bad luck.

I shot that exact load in my .270, my rifle only has a 22 in barrel so velocity was a little under what you are showing, but to the question of the scirocco bullet, I have killed numerous whitetails and a mule deer with this bullet and it performed perfectly, all one shot kills, and of the few bullets I recovered they will retain 70% plus of their weight, load these and hunt with confidence, Mike.

I would choose a 130 Scirocco over a 140 Accubond any day. It is a better bullet IMO from game killed.

I had no problem working up a load with the 130 Scirocco and I've killed quite a bit of game with various bullet weights in different calibers.

My best loads were with IMR4350.

What I would strongly encourage you to do, however, is to do a good break in with that new rifle using a bullet other than the Scirocco. I used Btips, Speers, or Sierras, whatever is onhand. OR, buy some factory Remmy or Win stuff, whatever is cheapest, but get a few rounds in the bore before the Scirocco project.

Then clean the bore thoroughly before trying the scirocco. You might get discouraged with these bullets until that bbl has quite a few pass through it.

I think I had about 50 bullets in my new bbl before it began behaving, and each bbl is different. (Hart bbl).

I'd take a hard look at IMR powders too, especially 4350 and 4831. Both worked better for me over the Hodgdon.

.4's groups with 4 shot strings. No idea about velocity...didn't care when holes were that tight.

The 270Win is a real deer killing machine. No experience with the Sciroccos in 270, but lot's of experience with the 130's in 270--seems all of them work reasonably well. The only advice I can give from real experience would be not to fall in love with your primer. My groups got a lot smaller when I switched to the CCI 250 Mag primer.

I have Nos, Speer and Hornady bullets in 130 Gr if you want to try others. I'm just down the street in wkfs.

Ditto the comment on the primers. My 270 performed much better with Fed mag primers than it did with the benchrest primers. The result was the same in cold weather and in warm.

I would shoot the load you have and if it shoots around MOA, call it good. most any 130 grain .270 should be fine, however I would be a little suprised if you got 3200,
My FN gets about 3080. With 60grs of H-4831 SC. I am up to 61 grains now...tj3006

Two years ago I killed a really nice 235 lb ten pointer at about 280 yards with my .270 Win using 60 grains of 4831 and a 130 gr Scirroco. The first shot was angling away and the deer took a step the moment the shot broke. The bullet went in at the base of the tail and went straight up about 14 inches of spine before coming to rest halfway down the deer's back. As you would expect this shot put the deer down and immobilized him immediately but he did require a second shot to quickly end it. The first bullet weighs 109 grains and opened perfectly. The second shot was a pass through. That was my only swift bullet experience.
I'm not much on fancy, premium bullets for whitetails. I've shot too many with core-lokts and Nosler solid base (my favorites) to think they require much more. But from time to time I tinker with the expensive stuff just because. My favorite deer bullet remains the .270 with a 130 Nosler Solid Base...thank God Nosler brought it back in a limited run a year ago--I bought 500!
