I've always liked the look of sporterised Krags, but you never see any here in Australia.
How much would you pay for a 30-40 Krag in reasonable condition ?? Not an original one, but one suitable to make into a sporter ?? Are they hard to find ??

i recently looked at two that were in cut down military stocks.
one had the bbl shortened and was 350.00 us
the other was in a bit better shape and could be restocked to original and was 550.00 us.
these were the 98 bolt actions.
i paid 500 for a 95 lever gun someone had cut the stock on. and put a recoil pad on sometime in the late 60's early 70's.

In Norway we have a lot of old Krag-Jørgensen rifles. Of course chambered in our 6,5x55 and not the US 30-40.

Prices are about 160 to 250 USD for a rifle suitable for sporterizing. Many are also sold with match triggers of high quality.

Thats the sort of thing I'd like to end up with.Hopefully I can pick up one of the 6.5 Jorgensens fairly cheap as it will probably cost a fortune to get it shipped here.
Here's Whelens and another....

Most popular smaller Krag "Cat" in the US was the .25 Krag.

I am certain some 6.5 "Cats" were done, but few.

I have owned original and sporterized 6.5 x 55 Norwegians , but they are much more uncommon in the US. ( mine came from Canada)

The Krag rifles are so smooth, and they look good. Pretty decent looking sporters everybody has here. They all look like they are ready to go the woods.

I love them as well. We bought one for my stepfather a few years ago and he loves carrying it when we hunt. I am curious since we're on the subject:

1. how hard is it to set them up for different chamberings than 30-40? (I've heard the magazine functionality is the stopper here?)

2. how are they for pressure? (again, I hear they are only good with low pressure loadings)

I saw a gorgeous one Jerry Fisher had at a show, in 405 win. I would like to have one but don't really need one in a 30 cal, but a 35 wold be real sweet.

Look into your country's import regulations, I'm pretty sure export from Norway is straightforward (if import is anything to go by).

I dont have one for sale myself but I or almost any norwegian on here should be able to find one cheapish, sporterized with a match barrel at least, maybe an original long-Krag or a Karabin.

I love mine for fieldshooting, if it rains blame the gun, if not blame me.

Get one, you'll never sell it.

Iron Buck,

What's the story on this piece? Looks like a Gew 98 barrel has been fitted. Some sort of 8mm rimmed cartridge?

I have seen conversions in 35 WCF and 405 WCF, both functioned well.

Thanks Lars,I might get you to see if you can find one for me while I look into the import side of things.
Nothing original, one that can be sporterised without destroying a restorable gun.
From your user name I take it you're a Ducati man ?

Yuma and our Norwegians Members..

I'd be interested in one in 6.5 x 55 also.

I have a sporterized 1898 Carbine version.

Amazingly accurate for a 110 + yr old rifle.

I shoot light loads of 25 grains of SR 4759 under a 168 grain match bullet. That gives a 3 to 4 inch group at 200 meters with open sites and my terrible eye sight..

On my side here it seems pretty straight forward, I apply for a "B709" form from the Firearms Registry, nominate a dealer to pick it up from customs for me, fill out an "application to aquire" permit, and then its just like buying one over the counter.
What I need now is someone in Norway to find one for me, plus maybe a couple of spare 6.5 barrels for other projects, and find out what it takes to export it to me.......someone? anyone??

.....in hopefulness Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

It is a Krag barrel in 30-40Krag. At some point of it's life someone put the old mauser rear sight...and front sight on it. The front sight was done like a barrel band. This is why I am having the sights removed. I dropped it off at Gary Stiles over the weekend, he is taking care of this by removing the old front sight, adding a new one. Removing the rear sight entirely and installing the old Redfield Peep that I gave him. It attaches with no drilling or tapping.

My old Krag is far from original. It is just an old sporteized rifle. But it shoots and functions great. It is a lot of fun to take out into the field Smiler
