i have a remington m7fs-18.5" bbl 6pounds with a 4x zeiss scope, light & easy to carry but impossible to shoot off hand, i use in tight stands where i can get a goor rest position.

i also have a m7mc, 20" bbl 7.5 pounds with 4x zeiss scope. It jumps to my sholder and i would not think twice about using it in a drive..

1 also have a win pre 64 m88 in 308, 8.5 pounds with a 4x zeiss.. it thinks it is an o/u shotgun but has the trigger pull of a h&r single shot..

when we do drives i use my Beretta 12 ga. auto..

CraigP,
I have a Ruger M77 Compact in a .308 that is about five pounds twelve ounces, and has a barrel that is 16". I topped it off with a Leupold 2-7 and have used it several times on big critters. Love the gun, she bucks when you shoot (compared to other .308), but its incredibly manuverable in the brush (esp. after whitetails). It probably wouldn't be a good gun for a guy who is 6'5" (this gun is shorter than my 10/22), but for those who are smaller framed or are looking for something for their wife or kid, this would make a great rifle. It shoots really well, and I purchased this gun specifically to pack into the wilderness to chase alpine mule deer. What I can't understand, is that this firearm costs about $20 more than the usual M77, but has 1/2 the amount of metal and wood!!

thanks for your response Tom that is just what I thought you'd say.

For what it is worth one of the few gun projects that I have interest in doing is to do a short barreled (19" or 21") 308. The one thing that I would do is put a bit of beef in the tube. I'd like it to be between .65 and .7 at the muzzle.

This rifle would be short and fairly light and easy to carry. It would be easy to shoot off a bench and it would also be quite easy to shoot offhand. At least this is my opinion and thoughts and learnings over the years.

I'd love to build such a rifle and have it either set up with Premier reticle dotz or with a target click on top. I'd be comfy in shooting to 700 with this rig day in and day out.

I'd also be comfy in shooting it offhand.

Have a great weekend!

Craig,

I have used .308s with 19" and 20" barrels, and they work well. The 19" barrel is on a Steyr Scout which also has a short buttstock. Overall length of the package is about 1 meter (39"+). It handles well in the thick stuff.

Ruger also sells that Compact in .308, so I presume that it will work OK. The handgun guys would probably have some good opinions on short barrels.

I think at those ranges you actually would benefit with some lower MV on your bullets.

Hey Craig, We have done a lot of Deer Drives where I hunt. The biggest problem is generally having enough Standers and Drivers to makeit really work without them sneaking around the Drivers.

That said, our choice for 3-60yd shots is a good old 12ga M870 with "000BuckShot". It cuts them a flip. Only thing is you need to check your Rules & Regs, cause some States won't allow Buck Shot.

Don't forget a good old 30-30, 35Rem, 444Mar or 45-70 with Iron Sights as they work right well in close quarters too. Not nearly as quick (for me)as the Shotgun, but they do kill well.

I've had a bunch of 308Wins and the 20" barrel is as short as I would want on it due to the report. And there is plenty of "kill" in the 20" 308Win barrel.

I have shot quite a bit of game with several different 18 to 20" barreled rifles in 308. I have shot a few of these rifles out to 600 yards [on paper] with very good accuracy.

A short light 308 is one of my favorite rifles.

I recently killed a Black Bear in Idaho with a short barrelled 308 single shot.

A friend just bought a new laminated stocked 20" Remington Model 7. He shot it at 200 yards on paper at the deer lease a couple of weeks ago and it shot very good.
